Adapted from British author David Pease’s best-selling series of crime novels centering on the mystery of the Yorkshire Ripper, 1974 was quickly followed by 1980 (directed by James Marsh), and 1983 (directed by Anand Tucker). ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi Red Riding: In the Year of Our Lord 1980 The Red Riding Trilogy continues in this sequel that picks up six years after the events of the first film. The Yorkshire Ripper is continuing to prey on the young women of a dead-end town, and the local police have proven completely ineffective in solving the crimes. When Manchester detective Peter Hunter (Paddy Considine) arrives in Yorkshire to investigate, he discovers a number of inconsistencies in the official report, and begins to suspect foul play. Unfortunately for both Detective Hunter and the growing list of victims, the local police seem unusually tight-lipped about the case. Perhaps their refusal to aid Detective Hunter in his investigation has something to do with his previous visit to Yorkshire in 1974, when he rubbed the local authorities the wrong way while investigating a shooting. As Detective Hunter delves deeper into the case, it becomes increasingly obvious that incompetence isn’t likely to blame for the lack of progress made by Yorkshire police. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi Red Riding: In the Year of Our Lord 1983 The Red Riding Trilogy draws to a close in this installment that finds Detective Chief Superintendent Maurice Jobson (David Morrissey) realizing that the Yorkshire Ripper may still be at large, despite the fact that someone has already been convicted of the heinous crimes. When a young girl is abducted in an incident that bears a chilling resemblance to the crimes of the Yorkshire Ripper, Chief Superintendent Jobson is forced to consider the possibility that he helped to put the wrong man behind bars. Meanwhile, local solicitor John Piggott (Mark Addy) stumbles onto evidence of a massive cover up, and wages a one-man mission to uncover the truth. Adapted from British author David Pease’s best-selling series of crime novels centering on the mystery of the Yorkshire Ripper. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

American Pit Bull - Widescreen

American Pit Bull – Widescreen

$19.99

In this documentary from Academy Award-nominated filmmakers Marilyn and Chuck Braverman, the remarkable yet tragic history of the American Staffordshire Terrier – aka the Pit Bull Terrier – is explored from the era when it was considered the “All American Dog” to it’s later reputation as a vicious attack dog frequently used by drug dealers. While it may be hard for some to believe, there was a time when the Pit Bull Terrier was considered a loyal and loving companion for humans. Thomas Jefferson owned a pair, Helen Keller relied on one for assistance, and even the Little Rascals frolicked carefree with their skittish Pit Bull Petey. Sadly, Pit Bull would gradually evolve from the working dog of the upper class to become the bloodthirsty bodyguard of choice for inner city drug dealers. In this documentary filmmakers explore the entire spectrum of roles that the Pit Bull has played in American society while asking whether the breed is a dependable family pet or an unpredictable killing machine. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Baxter - Widescreen Subtitle

Baxter – Widescreen Subtitle

$12.99

The French-filmed Baxter is based on the American novel Hell Hound. The title character is a bull terrier, who in the course of the film has many masters–and for good reason. Baxter has been instrumental in the deaths or serious injuries of most of the human beings who’ve come in contact with him. The dog’s latest owner is a young neo-Nazi. nd Baxter makes it quite clear (to the audience at least) what he has in store for this fellow. Don’t be misled by the title or the fact that the leading character is a dog with a full range of human emotions; Baxter is not a family film. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Sorrell and Son – Dolby

$24.99

Previously filmed in 1927 and 1934, Warwick Deeping’s novel Sorrel and Son was adapted as a British TV miniseries in 1984. Set in the 1920s, the story concerned the efforts of impoverished Captain Stephen Sorrell (Richard Pasco) to raise his son Kit (Paul Critchley) all by himself, after his wife had walked out on him. Despite many deprivations, Kit grew up to become a doctor, justifying the years of devotion and sacrifice on the part of Sorrel Sr. The six hour-long episodes of Sorrel and Son were telecast by Yorkshire Television. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
