Original Soundtrack – Wonderland [Original Soundtrack] $6.99 Original score composed by Cliff Martinez.The soundtrack to Jonathan Cox`s Wonderland revolves around the dark underworld that surrounded porn star John Holmes in the early `80s — including the July 1, 1981, murders of the Wonderland gang in which he was implicated (and for which he was later acquitted). Not surprisingly, the music plays like the evil twin to the ecstatically decadent Boogie Nights soundtrack, mixing strutting glam rock and punk with the coked-up new wave, pop, hard rock, and singer/songwriter fare that defined `70s and early-`80s music outside of disco. The soundtrack begins on something of a sour note with Jonathan Davis` "Love on the Rocks," a bitter, Bowie-esque ballad that tries to ape `70s rock conventions but just ends up paling in comparison to the songs that surround it. Davis` overwrought vocals and lyrics like "Yesterday`s gone/And all I want is a smile" make the song downright seedy and unpleasant, but then again, so is the story that the movie tells. However, after that Wonderland has nowhere to go but up, which it does with revved-up songs like T. Rex`s "20th Century Boy," Iggy & the Stooges` "Search and Destroy," the Cars` "Good Times Roll," and one of the soundtrack`s most apt picks, Duran Duran`s "Girls on Film." Roxy Music`s "In Every Dream Home a Heartache," Patti Smith`s "Gloria/In Excelsis Deo," and Ted Nugent`s "Stranglehold" all capture the film`s claustrophobic, paranoid vibe, albeit in very different ways, while songs like Dobie Gray`s "Drift Away," Bad Company`s "Shooting Star," and Gordon Lightfoot`s "If You Could Read My Mind" provide a not-so-ironic counterpoint. The dialogue that bookends the music is mostly throwaway (even the provocatively titled "Can I Touch It?"), but that doesn`t prevent Wonderland from being a successful, if slightly depressing, soundtrack. ~ Heather Phares Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Lindgren; Deborah Lurie.Besides Steven Spielberg and John Williams, few director/composers have yielded as many memorable moments as have Tim Burton and Danny Elfman. With styles that dutifully complement each other`s noted eccentricities, the pair rarely (when patrolling the magical fault line where music and visuals meet) disappoint. Such is the case with 2010`s Alice in Wonderland, a world in which the two were seemingly destined to one day inhabit. Pieces like "Proposal/Down the Hole," "Only a Dream," "Blood of the Jabberwocky," and "Alice Returns" calmly evoke the pastoral English countryside, but the majority of Elfman`s work here treats the fable as a Wagnerian epic. It`s hard not to imagine the wicked smile that Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) would beam forth upon hearing Elfman`s glorious "Alice`s Theme," a melodically charged love letter to the girl who became an unwilling euphemism for lost souls, madness, and drug culture. Here, the composer treats poor Alice as an anti-hero, regaling her from afar with a children`s choir and pleading "It`s such a long, long way to fall Alice, Alice, oh Alice." Wonderland (DVD) $13.22 Set in present-day London, Michael Winterbottom's WONDERLAND follows each of three generations of a family through one wintry November weekend during the city's traditional Bonfire Night celebration. Alice In Wonderland $33.61 This set compiles Randy Greif`s 5-album series based on Lewis Carroll`s "Alice In Wonderland."Recorded between 1991 and 1993.A mainstay of the North American experimental-music underground, Randy Greif often adopts intriguing conceptual designs for new recording projects. His creative reinvention of ALICE IN WONDERLAND is certainly ambitious–a dusty BBC reading of Lewis Carroll`s classic story, spiced up with tape loops, electro-acoustic treatments, sound effects, and stretches of original score. Greif`s six-hour presentation took the form of five serial installments, the final four available only by mail order–and only with proof-of-purchase certificates from previous volumes.Soleilmoon has gone all out with this five-disc reissue of ALICE IN WONDERLAND. Greif`s consistent (predominantly dark) vision remains the main attraction, but the excellent new artwork (a suitably surreal melange of ink drawings and CGI backgrounds), remastered tapes, and a set of collectible cards enhance the experience. The familiar narrative leads the listener down the rabbit hole; Greif takes it from there. Tape mischief and mood-sculpting electronics flesh out the freakish landscape and unforgettable characters. ALICE has inspired its share of imitation and homage, but Greif`s magical, musique concrFte magnum opus ranks alongside animator Jan Svankmajer`s definitive "Alice" (1988) as the most terrific of Wonderland tributes. Alice in Wonderland - $4.99 A more appropriate title for this animated 60-minute special might have been Alice in Hanna-Barbera Land, since the cartoon producers have eschewed the original Lewis Carroll text and John Tenniel illustrations for something that more closely resembles The Jetsons or Scooby Doo. Updated to the 1960s, the story begins as Alice, a precocious suburban youngster, escapes the wrath of her stern father when she and her dog Fluff follow the White Rabbit down the rabbit hole and into Wonderland. In standard Hanna-Barbera operating procedure, several of the familiar Wonderland denizens are redrawn to resemble the actors providing their voices: thus, The White Knight looks and talks like “Jose Jimenez,” the Hispanic character created by comedian Bill Dana (who also wrote the script), while the Queen of Hearts is a visual and verbal clone of Zsa Zsa Gabor. In a similar vein, some of the characters have been completely overhauled to be more “relevant” to Sixties viewers: Humpty Dumpty is now Humphrey Dumpty, with his Bogart-like voice provided by Allan Melvin; the Mad Hatter has a female counterpart, Hedda Hatter, voiced by gossip columnist Hedda Hopper (famous for her bizarre headwear); and the Caterpillar has suddenly grown two heads, who look and sound exactly like Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble. The songs, by Lee Adams and Charles Strouse of Bye Bye Birdie fame, are pleasant but forgettable, with the exception of “What’s a Nice Kid Like You Doing In a Place Like This?”, sung by the Cheshire Cat (his “hipster” voice supplied by Sammy Davis Jr.). In fact, it is obvious that Hanna-Barbera thought that they had a hit on their hands with this song, the title of which is used as the “subtitle” of this irreverent but entertaining cartoon romp. Alice in Wonderland – Widescreen $29.99 This Disney feature-length cartoon combines the most entertaining elements of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Chasing after the White Rabbit, who runs into view singing “I’m Late! I’m Late!,” Alice falls down the rabbit hole into the topsy-turvy alternate world of Wonderland. She grows and shrinks after following the instructions of a haughty caterpillar, attends a “Very Merry Unbirthday” party in the garden of the Mad Hatter and the March Hare, stands in awe as the Cheshire Cat spouts philosophy, listens in rapt attention as Tweedledum and Tweedledee relate the story of the Walrus and the Carpenter (a sequence usually cut when Alice is shown on TV), and closes out her day with a hectic croquet game at the home of the Red Queen. The music and production design of Alice in Wonderland is marvelous, but the film is too much of a good thing, much too frantic to do full honor to the whimsical Carroll original, and far too episodic to hang together as a unified feature film. One tactical error is having Alice weep at mid-point, declaring her wish to go home: This is Alice in Wonderland, Walt, not Wizard of Oz!
