Philip Morsberger

Philip Morsberger

$34.42

Philip Morsberger (born 1933) is a prolific painter who has worked and held influential teaching positions in America and Britain since the early 1960s. During his long career Morsberger has never been subservient to any one style of painting; his work has evolved through a number of distinct phases that have embraced realism, abstraction, and the American comic-strip tradition. Morsberger`s most recent pictures, brimming with color and energy, blend abstract and narrative qualities. They are full of personal imagery, often based on the artist`s childhood memories and humorous philosophy of life. This study by Christopher Lloyd explores the themes and styles that have shaped Morsberger`s career to date. It features eighty of the artist`s most significant works, introduced with an insightful examination of his techniques and inspirations. A sensitive biographical portrait is accompanied by photographs of Morsberger throughout his life. Also included are eight personal appreciations by such significant contemporaries as R. B. Kitaj, Brian Aldiss, Jon Hassler, and William Tucker.

Philip De Laszlo (Hardcover)

Philip De Laszlo (Hardcover)

$37.73

Philip de László (18691937) was born into a humble Hungarian family in Budapest and rose to become the preeminent portrait artist working in Britain between 1907 and 1937. He painted nearly 3,000 portraits, including those of numerous kings and queens, four American presidents, and countless members of the European nobility. Has any one painter ever before painted so many interesting and historical personages?” asked his contemporaries. There has been no biography of him since 1939, and this new account of both his life and his work draws on previously untapped material from the family archive of over 15,000 documents, to which the author has had unrivaled access. It establishes the intrinsic importance of his art and re-positions him in his rightful place alongside his great contemporaries John Singer Sargent, Sir John Lavery, and Giovanni Boldini.

Philip Henry Gosse (Hardcover)

Philip Henry Gosse (Hardcover)

$21.42

Philip Henry Gosse’s detailed watercolors of Alabama’s native insects and plants represent a landmark in the annals of American natural history. Offered for the first time are the complete full-color illustrations from Gosse’s Entomologia Alabamensis, along with a biographical essay placing Gosse’s work in the context of his long and fruitful life.  Born in 1810 in Worcester, England, the young Philip Henry Gosse developed a passion for the natural world. Having learned the basics of miniature portraiture from his father, Gosse quickly took for his artistic subjects the flourishing marine life he discovered along the English coast. In May, 1838, Gosse took a teaching job in Dallas County, Alabama. For the next eight months he collected the insect specimens that he would preserve in the beautifully detailed watercolors of Entomologia Alabamensis. In addition, he composed a highly personalized chronology of his life in a frontier culture, published eventually as Letters from Alabama. Following his return to England, Gosse went on to publish more than 40 books, producing some of the 19th century’s finest illustrations of insects and marine organisms. Today, he is remembered as a popular writer of science for the general public and as a passionate artist whose work in Alabama and elsewhere captured and revealed the beauty and vitality of the natural world. Copublication with the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art and Auburn University Libraries.

Philip Guston (Paperback)

Philip Guston (Paperback)

$20.14

This is the premier collection of dialogues, talks, and writings by Philip Guston (1913-1980), one of the most intellectually adventurous and poetically gifted of modern painters. Over the course of his life, Guston`s wide reading in literature and philosophy deepened his commitment to his art–from his early abstract expressionist paintings to his later gritty, intense figurative works. With his gift for stories and wordplay, Guston left many recorded talks, conversations, and notes written to himself in his studio. This collection, edited by his longtime friend Clark Coolidge, with many pieces appearing in print for the first time, lets us hear Guston`s voice-as the artist delivers a lecture on Renaissance painting, instructs students in a classroom setting, and discusses artists and writers such as Piero della Francesca, Chirico, Picasso, Kafka, Beckett, and Gogol. Introduced with an overview of Guston`s life and work by Dore Ashton, these commentaries demonstrate why his words matter and at the same time provide a compelling perspective on art itself.

Rothko's Rooms: The Life and Works of an American Artist -

Rothko’s Rooms: The Life and Works of an American Artist -

$14.99

Like fellow American artist Jackson Pollock, painter Mark Rothko (1903-1970) built his reputation during the immediate post-WWII years for his broadly-scaled abstract paintings. Rothko’s chief goal lay in using the artworks, with their layered shapes, colors and textures, to elicit a spectrum of raw human emotions – from fear to anger to ecstasy to melancholia, and everything in-between. Ontologically, he sought complete envelopment of the spectator in the aesthetic tableaux at hand. This transcontinentally-produced 2000 documentary relays the chronological tale of Rothko’s life as it discusses the gradual development of his artistry over the passage of time; it uses as a thematic touchstone the fact that one of Rothko’s ongoing quests involved the pursuit of the perfect “space” in which to showcase his artwork (hence the “rooms” of the title). Interviews with the artist’s son and daughter, Christopher and Kate, are featured, in addition to discussions with Rothko’s close friends, acquaintances and colleagues in the art world, and a host of art historians. The late architect Philip Johnson is one of the interviewees. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
