A biography of the great 19th-century British statesman, who served four times as Prime Minister. Jenkins examines Gladstone's public side, including his forming of the Liberal party and his advocacy of Irish home rule; and he examines Gladstone's interest in knowledge and learning, as well as the strong religious views that guided his life.

Phil Wickham - Cannons *

Phil Wickham – Cannons *

$11.31

Personnel: Phil Wickham (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Gabe Scott (lap steel guitar, dobro); Pete Kipley (bass guitar, programming); Jeremy Lutito, Joel Plotnik, Dan Bailey (drums); Amelia Emery, Savannah Packard (background vocals).Coming in under the radar may suit Phil Wickham just fine, if only because his music is too original to fall prey to the pressures of being in the spotlight. Take his sophomore effort, Cannons, as a mere atmospheric Britpop record and you will have missed the point entirely. Between his mesmerizing tenor and his quietly potent songwriting, the California native builds on the lyrical prowess of his self-titled debut with this collection of captivating tunes. You get the feeling that Wickham actually gets it with his witness of the gospel, that is, he isn`t simply stuffing clich\u0002s into some producer`s tired idea of radio-friendly pop songs. And he doesn`t have to yell for his message to ring loud as day. "Beautiful," for instance, conveys deep love for God`s creation, while "Desire" confesses humankind`s nothingness before Him and a yearning to follow. Cannons is an intriguing tale of personal worship that showcases Wickham`s voice and insightful songwriting. ~ Jared Johnson Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

Phil Collins - But Seriously

Phil Collins – But Seriously

$7.94

Personnel: Phil Collins (vocals, keyboards, drums, tambourine); David Crosby (vocals); Daryl Stuermer, Dominic Miller, Eric Clapton (guitar); Steve Winwood (Hammond organ); Nathan East, Lelan Sklar, Pino Palladino (bass); Alex Brown, Marva King, Lynn Fiddmont (background vocals).Phoenix Horns: Don Myrick (saxophone); Harry Kim, Rhomlee Michael Davis (trumpet); Louis Satterfield (trombone).Recorded at the Farm, Surrey, England and A&M Studios, Los Angeles, California.Phil Collins` fourth solo album, 1989`s BUT SERIOUSLY, is the first solo release by the Genesis drummer after 1985`s NO JACKET REQUIRED, the album which catapulted this oddly charming guy into a multimedia superstar with a budding film and television career. As the title hints, BUT SERIOUSLY is a mature, thoughtful album, less giddy than the hit machine that was NO JACKET REQUIRED, and with a newfound sense of social commentary on songs like "Something Happened on the Way to Heaven" and the anti-homelessness single "Another Day in Paradise."What saves BUT SERIOUSLY from incipient earnestness is Collins` usual sense of diffident offhandedness, and his typically fine sense of pop songcraft. While BUT SERIOUSLY was not the worldbeater its predecessor was, it`s a more satisfying and long-lasting album. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

Phil Mosberg - Forest Through The Trees

Phil Mosberg – Forest Through The Trees

$9.99

Phil Mosberg: Phil Mosberg; Nate Bakkum (bass guitar); Vance Okraszewski, Jon Irabagon.Personnel: Phil Mosberg (guitar); Jon Irabagon (clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone); Vance Okraszewski (drums).Audio Mixers: Griffin Rodriguez; Phil Mosberg.Recording information: Truckstop Audio Recording Co., Chicago, IL (04/25/2000-05/16/2000).This Chicago-based quartet led by guitarist Phil Mosberg effectively skirts the line between post-bop and the avant-garde, with tricky melodies, provocative solos, and attention to detail. The sole horn, Jon Irabogen, impresses with his authoritative, bold sound that sometimes recalls Coleman Hawkins as much as anyone. But, Irabogen is a sensitive player for the 21st century, with winding, confident lines that snake in and out of conventional harmonies, with split tones, overblowing, and a deep understanding of melody. He is just as effective on the frail, understated compositions that comprise a fair portion of the album. While Irabogen stands out for his command and fluidity, leader Mosberg wrote all the pieces and chimes in with some fine fingerwork. He shows his jazz influences, too, with some well-developed soloing. The album is not all about intensity, and one of the better tunes, "Split Valve," is a relaxed, boppish melody with strong contributions by Mosberg on amplified guitar and Irabogen on clarinet. Mosberg`s chamber influences are evident throughout, as on the chilling "Goose Egg." Bassist Nate Bakkum is an original, whether performing with or without the bow. He participates fully in the group sound in part as timekeeper but, more importantly, as a serious improviser and contributor to the front line. Drummer Vance Okraszewski delicately massages his set, and then explodes, however cautiously, with syncopated rhythms and crossbeats. Released on the small Solitaire Records label, this one might be easily missed, but it is a little gem that is a courageously askew and a bit off the beaten path. ~ Steven Loewy Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. K-Scope [Slipcase]- By Phil Manzanera

K-Scope [Slipcase]- By Phil Manzanera

$38.2

Personnel: Phil Manzanera (guitar, Farfisa organ, keyboards, synthesizer); Tim Finn, Neal Finn (vocals); Simon Ainley (guitar); Mel Collins (saxophone); Eddie Rayner (piano, keyboards); Francis Monkman (piano); Dave Skinner (keyboards); Bill MacCormick (bass, background vocals); Bill MacCormick, John Wetton (bass, background vocals); Simon Phillips, Paul Thompson (drums); Kevin Godley, Lol Cream (background vocals).Recorded at Sun Park Studios, Surrey, England from March to May 1978.Personnel: Phil Manzanera (vocals, guitar, piano, synthesizer); Kevin Godley (vocals, hi-hat); Neal Finn , Tim Finn, Bill MacCormick (vocals); Simon Ainley (guitar); Mel Collins (saxophone); Eddie Rayner, Dave Skinner, Francis Monkman (piano); Simon Phillips (drums).Liner Note Author: Phil Manzanera.Recording information: Sun Park Studios, Surrey, England (03/1978-05/1978).Recorded in the spring of 1978 at Yes bassist Chris Squire`s home studio, K-Scope featured three founding members of the Split Enz/Crowded House: Eddie Rayner (keys), Tim Finn (lead vocal) and brother Neil Finn (backing vocal). Manzanera also enlists percussion heavyweight Simon Phillips, good buddies John Wetton and Bill MacCormick (both bassists and vocalists), and saxophonist Mel Collins, among several others. The band strong-arms the solid pop rock structures and approaches the instrumentals with the same verve. The literally "coolest" tune in the set is also Manzanera`s personal favorite, the breezy "Gone Flying." The composition (and performance) is a fine example of how truly excellent a pop song can be. Manzanera`s atmospheric "echo guitar" is at the core of the piece, with Phillips contributing refined, offbeat, fluid percussion, and MacCormick (arguably the most appealing vocalist on the album) providing equally exceptional bass work. The song is supplemented by the next cut, the quirky, instrumental "N-Shift," featuring MacCormick`s pronounced, funky basslines. Other stand out sounds include the opener, "K-Scope," a charged instrumental featuring Mel Collins on sax; the reggae rhythm of "Cuban Crisis"; Wetton`s lead vocal on "Numbers"; and Manzanera`s closing instrumental, "You Are Here." The bonus cuts include two energetic performances from 801`s 1977 tour ("Remote Control" and "Out of the Blue") and a demo version of "Slow Motion TV" (titled "It Don`t Matter to Me"). The frantic, anxious "Remote Control" features a hot Andy Mackay tenor sax solo, and Roxy Music`s "Out of the Blue," while failing in the vocal department, showcases Bill MacCormick`s thoughtful, occasionally fast bass playing. Though probably not Manzanera`s most accomplished work, K-Scope remains one of his most interesting and enjoyable projects. [In the label`s ongoing effort to give Phil Manzanera his due, Expression Records later released K-Scope with three bonus cuts.] ~ David R

Phil Woods Quintet - American Songbook [5/30]

Phil Woods Quintet – American Songbook [5/30]

$16.57

Phil Woods/Phil Woods Quintet: Phil Woods; Steve Gilmore (bass instrument); Bill Charlap, Bill Goodwin, Brian Lynch.Personnel: Phil Woods (clarinet, saxophone); Brian Lynch (trumpet); Bill Charlap (piano); Bill Goodwin (drums).Liner Note Author: Nat Hentoff.Recording information: Avatar Recording Studios, NY (2002).Photographer: Jimmy Katz.Arrangers: Phil Woods; Bill Goodwin.Phil Woods, the great American saxophonist, has been featured in more diverse settings than almost anyone in the history of the music. His constant challenging of himself as a player, bandleader, and composer has been admirable since his debut set as a leader. While standards sets these days are not only a dime a dozen but mostly cop-outs from established artists and newcomers who either lost or never had the chops to execute them with any aesthetic imprint, let alone the one they deserve, septuagenarian Woods breathes life into ten of these tunes, and reinvents them both as harmonic structures and as tools for swing. With trumpeter Brian Lynch, pianist Bill Charlap (a fine leader in his own right), bassist Steve Gilmore, and Billy Goodwin on drums, Woods takes on "Foggy Day" as if it were a new tune. The same goes for the age-old jazz ballad of choice "All the Things You Are," on which Charlap sets the course for a wondrous take with the ensemble playing together as if they co-wrote the tune. Lynch`s muted trumpet is a natural choice, but Charlap`s extrapolation on the chord voicings and Woods playing the middle-low register of his horn and easing out with a sense of phrasing akin to Paul Desmond`s. The front-line interplay on "I`ve Got You Under My Skin," is simply gorgeous, especially when Woods takes his second solo break and Lynch slips back in behind the beat. One can hear the entire history of the alto as a solo instrument in this tune. And if you are about to groan at seeing the nugget "Summertime" in this set, just take a listen to the Latin backbeat that this tune builds on, where blues, son and samba all meet, and Woods` clarinet playing when juxtaposed against Lynch`s mute is simply out of this world. One wonders how anyone ever played it differently. The joint closes with "Right as the Rain," a near pastoral tune, except the shimmering horn interplay brings it right down into the blues again. The fills Charlap plays around the front line are simple, elegant, spare, and attention grabbing. This is one for the summer of 2006, and offers a fine view of what Woods and his crew are capable of when faced with the daunting task of reinventing standards. ~ Thom Jurek Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Includes liner notes by Bret Primack.Personnel: Phil Woods; George Mraz, Kenny Washington, Tommy Flanagan.Liner Note Author: Bret Primack.Altoist Phil Woods took a rare vacation from playing with his regular group to collaborate with pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist George Mraz and drummer Kenny Washington on this fine straight-ahead quartet date. The 13 selections are fairly concise (clocking in between 3-7 minutes apiece) and most of the material (other than "Canadian Sunset," "Yours Is My Heart Alone," "Blue and Sentimental" and Bill Evans` classic "Waltz for Debby") consists of either obscurities or recent originals. A special bonus is that Woods plays his appealing clarinet on three numbers. Highlights include "Charles Christopher" (a tribute to Charlie Parker), "Butter" and Hal Galper`s "Just Us." ~ Scott Yanow Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

Various Artists - Phil`s Spectre: A Wall Of Soundalikes

Various Artists – Phil`s Spectre: A Wall Of Soundalikes

$15.71

Performers include: Kane & Abel, The Dolls, The Supremes, The Darnells.Liner Note Author: Mick Patrick.Arrangers: Donald Peake; Bill Baker; Jimmy Holvay; Gary Beisbier; Jack Nitzsche; Nick DeCaro; Nino Tempo; Ray Pohlman; Richard Podolor; Sonny Bono; Van McCoy; Bert de Coteaux. You could fill a box set with fairly accurate, decent-to-great Phil Spector imitations. There are "only" 24 of them (all from 1963-1967) on the Phil`s Spectre: A Wall of Soundalikes compilation, but it`s certainly a good, and never less than interesting, selection of Son-of-Wall-of-Sound productions from the `60s. Only one of these (the Righteous Brothers` majestic "(You`re My) Soul and Inspiration") was a big hit, and though some of the others did pretty well (Nino Tempo & April Stevens`s "All Strung Out" and Sonny & Cher`s "Just You"), it`s likely that most of these singles will be unfamiliar to all but the upper-tier `60s collector. Which is one of the set`s strengths: you`ll be surprised how much Spectorish pop was made in the mid-`60s, and also be surprised how good some of it was, though some of it`s only ordinary. The best of the batch include Jackie DeShannon`s original 1963 version of "When You Walk in the Room," covered for a British Invasion hit by the Searchers; the Beach Boys` cover of "Why Do Fools Fall in Love," initially buried on a 1964 B-side; and the Walker Brothers` lush "Love Her," which was a fair-sized hit in Britain. Obscure, not-so-great sides by the Supremes ("Run, Run, Run") and Gene Pitney ("Tremblin`") also make the cut. But some of the finest treasures here are the songs that hardly anyone`s ever heard of, like Alder Ray`s "A Little Love (Will Go a Long Way)" (a dead ringer for a 1963 single by the Crystals or Darlene Love); the Four Pennies` "When the Boy`s Happy (The Girl`s Happy Too)" (actually the Chiffons under a different name); Dorothy Berry`s David Gates-produced "You`re So Fine"; Carol Connors`s sexy "My Baby Looks, but He Don`t Touch" (sung by the former lead vocalist of Spector`s first hit, the Teddy Bears` "To Know Him Is to Love Him"); P.J. Proby`s dramatic reading of Gerry Goffin and Carole King`s "I Can`t Make It Alone"; and the Dolls` "And That Reminds Me" (a great tune produced by rockabilly great Dale Hawkins). And there could be no more dead-on Righteous Brothers imitation than Kane & Abel`s "He Will Break Your Heart." There are plenty of other fine Spector soundalikes that don`t show up here, and for further research on the minigenre, it`s worth digging up such little-known goodies as Cher`s "Dream Baby," Ellie Greenwich`s "You Don`t Know," the Girlfriends` "My One and Only Jimmy Boy," Shelley Fabares`s "He Don`t Love Me," and Roberta Day`s "Someday." But Phil`s Spectre: A Wall of Soundalikes

Davis, Erik Lutkins.Recorded at Ocean Way, Essential Sound, Loud Recording and Studio 56, Nashville, Tennessee.Vassar is the top Nashville songwriter responsible for such smash hits as Dee Messina`s "Bye Bye" and "I`m Alright" and Alan Jackson`s "Right on the Money." As you might expect, the songwriting on Vassar`s self-titled debut is top-notch. Vassar also proves himself to be a talented vocalist and pianist.Vassar specializes in finely detailed descriptions of everyday life and relationships-from the day-to-day drudgery of the frazzled couple in "Just Another Day in Paradise" to the legendary exploits of the small-town lovers in the excellent "Joe and Rosalita." The versatile Vassar captures heartbreak and regret ("Didn`t You Know She`s Gone," the lovely "Rose Bouquet") proficiently and conveys the sheer joy of being in love ("That`s When I Love You," "Lucky As Me") with equal grace. If you want your country fun and upbeat, check out the disc`s irresistible first single, "Carlene," with its "ooh la la la" chorus, and "Six Pack Summer," Vassar`s breezy ode to fun in the sun. The piano-intensive production gives the CD a unique feel reminiscent of Bruce Hornsby`s early work. Whereas many Nashville songwriters have difficulty establishing themselves as artists in their own right, Vassar shouldn`t have any problem finding an appreciative audience.
