Painters Painting - $24.99 Painter’s Painting offers a rare glimpse into the nascent American art movement that finally established America as a place where world-class art is produced. Emile de Antonio recognized his friends to be the center of this postwar movement, even when the New York art establishment thought of them as jokes. Films from that era reveal relaxed conversations over tea (or over the canvas) with Willem de Kooning, Jasper Johns, Philip Pavia, Robert Rauschenberg, and Andy Warhol to name a few. Additionally there is commentary from contemporary art experts to help put the lives and work of these giants of American art into perspective. ~ Sean Hurley, Rovi |

The Lost Painting $10.54 Named one of the New York Times 10 Best Books for 2005, this real-life academic thriller by the author of A CIVIL ACTION is narrated in a chatty but informative style and simply bursts with vividly evoked characters. The book recounts how in 1989, two graduate students, Francesca Cappelletti and Laura Testa, were researching the provenance of a Caravaggio painting when they inadvertently came across information in a 17th-century account book mentioning another Caravaggio work, the Taking of Christ, which had been missing for 200 years. As Francesca follows a trail of documents and clues in search of the painting, art restorer Sergio Benedetti stumbles across that same Caravaggio at a Dublin residence for Jesuit priests. |

British Painting $14.86 From Hogarth`s first works around 1730 to the death of Turner in 1851, Britain`s status as an artistic nation was dramatically transformed. Hogarth himself brought modern life into painting and treated it with high moral seriousness disguised as satire Ramsay. Reynolds, Gainsborough, and Lawrence revolutionized portraiture, introducing a new authority and sensibility. The unconventional genius of Blake gave form to a unique mystic vision, while Constable explored nature in a new manner, encouraging developments that were to lead to Impressionism. Finally, Turner took painting into a realm of sublime grandeur, expressing the age of Romanticism as vividly as Byron, Shelley, and Keats were doing in poetry. William Vaughan analyzes the class structure and political background that made British art so distinctive. Using up-to-date research and critical theory, he shows us the colorful world of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when British art was richer and more influential than at any time before or since. |

Painting Culture $18.56 Painting Culture tells the complex story of how, over the past three decades, the acrylic "dot" paintings of central Australia were transformed into objects of international high art, eagerly sought by upscale galleries and collectors. Since the early 1970s, Fred R. Myers has studied—often as a participant-observer—the Pintupi, one of several Aboriginal groups who paint the famous acrylic works. Describing their paintings and the complicated cultural issues they raise, Myers looks at how the paintings represent Aboriginal people and their culture and how their heritage is translated into exchangeable values. He tracks the way these paintings become high art as they move outward from indigenous communities through and among other social institutions—the world of dealers, museums, and critics. At the same time, he shows how this change in the status of the acrylic paintings is directly related to the initiative of the painters themselves and their hopes for greater levels of recognition. Painting Culture describes in detail the actual practice of painting, insisting that such a focus is necessary to engage directly with the role of the art in the lives of contemporary Aboriginals. The book includes a unique local art history, a study of the complete corpus of two painters over a two-year period. It also explores the awkward local issues around the valuation and sale of the acrylic paintings, traces the shifting approaches of the Australian government and key organizations such as the Aboriginal Arts Board to the promotion of the work, and describes the early and subsequent phases of the works’ inclusion in major Australian and international exhibitions. Myers provides an account of some of the events related to these exhibits, most notably the Asia Society’s 1988 "Dreamings" show in New York, which was so pivotal in bringing the work to North American notice. He also traces the approaches and |
