Touch of Evil [Original Soundtrack] $17.99 Original score composed by Henry Mancini.Includes liner notes by Kevin Mulhall.Composer: Henry Mancini.Henry Mancini’s first major film score, TOUCH OF EVIL introduced generations of hipsters to the master’s musical style, dispelling their mistaken notions that he was a mere dispenser of schmaltz. The movie is a classic, twisted film noir directed by Orson Welles and shot with what was particularly remarkable realism for the time. This is one of those rare early soundtracks where the entire score is “source music,” that is, it’s playing on radios or in club scenes instead of being overlaid in the traditional Hollywood way. TOUCH OF EVIL uses Mancini’s deliberately seedy, slightly malevolent music to perfect effect. In particular, Mancini’s use of traditional mariachi instrumentation (the film is set on the California/Mexico border) sounds like it inspired 1990s soundtrack mavens Calexico. TOUCH OF EVIL definitely influenced early British industrial experimentalists Cabaret Voltaire; their 1981 album RED MECCA uses themes from TOUCH OF EVIL throughout, helping bring a new generation of fans to the original work. |

Original Four Seasons $14.99 The main question here is what they mean by “original,” since this performance is based on the usual version of Vivaldi’s famous set of concertos. What is different is that this is not Vivaldi’s original, but an arrangement, though not one that departs much from what one would normally hear. Toying with these pieces is commonplace in modern baroque practice, since it is believed Vivaldi expected his soloists to embellish their lines. Nigel Kennedy’s popular recording took quite a few liberties; Vanessa-Mae is perhaps a little more ostentatious than most when it comes to ornamentation, and the improvising extends to the ensemble at large, but it’s still pretty much Vivaldi’s ‘Four Seasons’ played by a talented extrovert with a somewhat romantic attitude. Much the same could be said of the ensemble arrangement of Tartini’s ‘Devil’s Trill’ Sonata, but the dance-beat arrangement of material from that work is not to be missed, perhaps the highlight of the disc. |

Rameau was the father of modern theoretical harmony, based on the triad rather than melodic motion. Despite his professed affinity for Lully’s music, devotees of Lully found Rameau’s music difficult, theoretical and unnatural.This is nearly impossible to discern today; ‘Dardanus’ is an extremely congenial work to modern listeners, accustomed as we are to the legacy of Rameau’s harmonic theory which provided the foundation for most music until the Twentieth Century put tremendous cracks in traditional harmonic structure.Marc Minkowski, a self-taught conductor, and his ensemble, Les Musiciens Du Louvre, have risen to international respect as specialists in the performance of Baroque music on original instruments. Former Letters To Cleo frontwoman Kay Hanley provides the voice of Josie, while original songs like “3 Small Words,” “Shapeshifter,” and “Pretend to Be Nice” turn out to be the kind of sugar-coated guitar-driven alt-pop that conjures up images of ’90s stalwarts Belly and Veruca Salt.The songwriting and recording contributions from members of Fountains Of Wayne, Counting Crows, the Go-Go’s, and Matthew Sweet also cinch the power-pop karma coursing through this hook-laden project. Chugging covers of “Real Wild Child,” the Motown standard “Money,” and the band’s theme song are the Jolt cola accompanying the Pop Rocks sensibility of these whip-smart songs. The only non-Josie cuts are by DuJour, another fictional band in the film, who come across as a modern-day Blackstreet for the teen crowd thanks to jams like “Dujour Around the World” and “Backdoor Lover.” |

Gore Vidal wrote the screenplay for a 1956 movie version starring Bette Davis, and Harvey Fierstein has scripted the musical adaptation with songs by John Bucchino. Fierstein, the author of several gay-oriented stage works (notably the book for La Cage aux Folles) and an accomplished Broadway actor (he played the mother in Hairspray), has gone even deeper into realism than Chayefsky or Vidal dared in the ’50s, turning the live-in brother of the wife, a “confirmed bachelor,” into the closeted gay man he could not be on TV or in the movies 50 years earlier. Fierstein also plays the part himself, singing in his gruff bass voice. The brother, Winston, is put out because, at least initially, he is not to be invited to the wedding, and he takes his revenge in “Immediate Family,” the show’s wittiest song and one that perks the score up considerably. Bucchino, in keeping with the small scale of the work, uses a chamber orchestra of only nine musicians and creates modest musical settings in which the various characters get to express their feelings. His lyrics have a touch of Stephen Sondheim in their frankness, but not much sparkle. In the `50s, the wonder of the kitchen-sink style was that it seemed to be elevating the lives of ordinary people into the realm of serious drama. A musical further heightens the experiences of these housewives and working people, but also exposes their dreariness. Despite the best efforts of Fierstein, Faith Prince as the wife, and Tom Wopat as the husband, A Catered Affair as a musical doesn’t really take off. Its flaws are somewhat hidden on the cast album, however, since the problem of its small scale in a Broadway house doesn’t come in. The show probably didn’t belong on Broadway (where it didn’t stay long), though fans of more serious theatrical flare might appreciate it in another forum. ~ William Ruhlmann |

History of Modern [LP] [PA] $22.98 Full performer name: Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (O.M.D.).A 2005 appearance on a German television program, followed by a tour — throughout which the original four members performed 1981’s Architecture & Morality in its entirety — culminated in the first OMD album since 1996 (and this particular quartet’s first since 1986). History of Modern, for the most part, sounds like OMD. There are two exceptions: “Sometimes” incorporates turntable scratching and guest vocalist Jennifer John, who interjects with lines from “Motherless Child,” while “Pulse” is neo-electro sleaze, full of bedroom whispers, moans, and yearning yelps. Most updates to the group’s sound are natural, while the placid ballad “New Holy Ground” and the somehow cathartic and pensive “Green” rate with the earlier material. At its best, History of Modern is to OMD what Secrets is to the Human League: an inspired return from post-punk-turned-synth-pop greats. ~ Andy Kellman |

Includes original release liner notes by Edward Jardim.This fine compilation brings together the very first recordings by the Modern Jazz Quartet (which was then billed as the Milt Jackson Quartet). The MJQ mixed bluesy bop with a heady, sophisticated approach (the latter heightened by the group’s self-representation as a buttoned-up, chamber jazz ensemble), and the seeds of that aesthetic are heard to excellent effect. This set of mostly originals (”‘Round Midnight” and Hoagy Carmichael’s “Heart and Soul” are the notable exceptions) gives the quartet plenty of room to stretch out, with Jackson’s gorgeous, cool-toned vibes leading the way. |
