The Count of Monte Cristo

Revenge rarely gets sweeter than it does in The Count of Monte Cristo, a rousing, impeccably crafted adaptation of Alexandre Dumas père’s literary classic. Filmed countless times before, the story is revitalized by director Kevin Reynolds (rallying after Waterworld) and screenwriter Jay Wolpert, who wisely avoid the action-movie anachronisms that plagued 2001’s dubious Dumas-inspired The Musketee…

One of the best romantic comedies of the 1990s, this box-office hit cemented writer-director Cameron Crowe’s reputation as “the voice of a generation.” Crowe could probably do without that label, but he’s definitely in sync with the times with this savvy story about a sports agent (Tom Cruise) whose fall from grace motivates his quest for professional recovery, and the slow-dawning realization tha…

Here’s the pitch: “It’s like Toy Story but these toys that come to life really kick butt!” That’s essentially it for this breezy popcorn flick. In a very smart first 10 minutes, new toy-company owner Denis Leary tells his crew he wants toys “that play back.” Hence the small soldiers land in Anytown, U.S.A., and the loner kid Alan (Gregory Smith) opens them up before they are supposed to be on the …

Personnel: Michael Penn (guitar, keyboards, percussion); Alyssa Park, Marisa Kuney, Amy Wickman, Marcy Vaj, Eric Gorfain, Alwyn Wright, Melissa Reiner (violin); Caroline Buckman, Leah Katz (viola); Mathew Cooker, Richard Dodd, John Krovoza (cello); Peter Nevin (clarinet); James King (saxophone); Jay Bellerose, Craig MacIntyre (drums, percussion).Recording information: Mimeograph Studio; The Pass.Although Michael Penn has some film scores on his r¿sum¿ (Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, The Anniversary Party, American Teen, The Last Kiss), he remains better known as a folk/rock/pop singer/songwriter, and it`s easy to see why on the basis of his music for Sunshine Cleaning, a quirky drama/comedy about two sisters who start a business cleaning up crime scenes. Penn has employed a small string section and the occasional horn to flesh out his cues, but the basic instrumentation is well within the folk/pop/rock mode, and the tracks for the most part simply sound like demos for his next singer/songwriter record, albeit ones he hasn`t yet finished with fully fledged song structures, melodies, and lyrics. An uncredited voice that no doubt is the composer can even be heard wordlessly humming and singing "na-na-na" and "doot-doot-doot" here and there as apparent preparation for the words and tunes to come. It is disconcerting, then, that this music is interspersed with actual pop/rock songs performed by others, including Golden Smog and Electrelane, since they seem to be the completed performances that Penn`s tracks are on their way to becoming. Presumably, this works to the satisfaction of the director to accompany her film, but to a mere listener to the soundtrack album, the music for Sunshine Cleaning comes off as incomplete. ~ William Ruhlmann Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Patterson.Although Chess Records is the Chicago label most often associated with black music from the 1950s and `60s, the Vee-Jay label gave Chess a respectable run for its money in terms of quality and variety. Jimmy Reed and John Lee Hooker, among others, are here representing the blues; while Jerry Butler, the Four Seasons, the Staple Singers, and the Swan Silvertones are among those weighing in for soul, doo-wop, and gospel. At 86 tracks spread over four discs, there`s very little filler on this stupendous collection (Gloria Jones` original version of "Tainted Love" is itself nearly worth the price of admission). Beautifully selected and compiled, with a 40 page booklet brimming with photos and superb notes, VEE-JAY: THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION is just that, and deserves a place in any well-rounded library. Both movies starred John Travolta as agents of God, and both soundtracks feature a mix of old and new "adult alternative" artists.John Hiatt, covered by Jewel on PHENOMENON, is represented once again, this time by Don Henley covering "Through Your Hands." Hiatt`s friend Bonnie Raitt checks in with a cover of Randy Newman`s "Feels Like Home," and Newman himself duets with Valerie Carter on "Heaven Is My Home." Instead of the Iguanas to represent the Southern youth movement, MICHAEL offers the Mavericks and Kenny Wayne Shepherd duetting with bluesman James Cotton on the Rolling Stones` "The Spider And The Fly." Any movie about spiritual matters wouldn`t be complete without Norman Greenbaum`s "Spirit In The Sky," and MICHAEL comes through there, too. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. Jay & The Americans - Jay & The Americans/Sunday & Me

Jay & The Americans – Jay & The Americans/Sunday & Me

$15.55

2 LP`s on 1 CD: JAY & THE AMERICANS (1965)/SUNDAY & ME (1966).Jay & The Americans includes: John "Jay" Traynor, Donald Fagen (vocals, keyboards); Walter Becker (guitar). This is a good idea for a reissue that has worked out even better. Although they`re mostly remembered today for their hit singles, Jay & the Americans were an early- to mid-`60s outfit brimming over with talent, and they made a string of delightful if not exactly profound albums that hold up surprisingly well some 40 years later. Jay and the Americans and Sunday and Me were two of them, from 1965 and 1966, respectively. In addition to the hit singles "Cara Mia" and "Only in America," about half of Jay and the Americans plays like a lost Phil Spector production, and the rest is a leaner brand of pop/rock. Sunday and Me isn`t quite as distinctive, but in addition to its title song it offers the folk-rock-influenced "Why Can`t You Bring Me Home" (which could have been a great song for Johnny Rivers to cover); the towering vocal showcase "Maria"; a pair of pleasing group originals, "Baby Stop Your Cryin`" and the ebullient "She`s the Girl (That`s Messin` Up My Mind)"; one achingly lyrical folk revival cover ("Chilly Winds"); and the group`s pleasingly embellished, spirited, and soulful rendition of the Rascals hit "Good Lovin`." The digital mastering is a special treat, as neither of these albums has ever appeared on CD in the United States, and most of what`s here hasn`t been in print since the mid- to late `60s. Also, the sound is impeccable and the packaging, in addition to re-creating the original artwork and notes, adds new biographical material (albeit principally from a British perspective, whence this CD comes). ~ Bruce Eder Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Jay & The Techniques includes: Jay Proctor.Personnel: Ronnie Waters, Rick Levy (guitar); Thelma Woods (viola); Adrienne Woods (cello); Bernie Kenerson (tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone); Richard Jones (trumpet, French horn); Randy Gilkey (piano, keyboards); Dave Mann (bass guitar); Fred Shaw (drums, percussion); LaChon Jackson, Terri Gore (background vocals).Audio Mixers: Fred Shaw; Jay Proctor.Photographer: Waggs Kutcher.Jay & the Techniques hit with "Apple, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie" in the `60s and reemerge with original lead singer, Jay Proctor for their first recording in decades. Proctor`s the only remainder from the original group whose break up was facilitated by Uncle Sam`s draft. They regrouped with different members for a non-selling Motown release in the early `70s, then disappeared until this release. Proctor`s voice is heavier, gruffer, and not the pop-soul instrument that helped ditties like "Keep the Ball Rolling" cross over. The main courses are the emotive "Palm of My Hand," the comforting "I`ll Cry With You," "Why Does Everything Change," and "Grass Ain`t Always Greener"; on the latter two, he clones Teddy Pendergrass` style and timbre so exactly you think it`s Teddy. An update of "Baby Make Your Own Sweet Music" (retitled as "Make Your Own Sweet Music") is the CD`s nadir; sometimes you should just leave well enough alone. ~ Andrew Hamilton Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Original Soundtrack - The Slaughter Rule

Original Soundtrack – The Slaughter Rule

$11.65

Original score composed by Jay Farrar.Producers: Michael Robinson, Greg O`Connor.Audio Mixer: Mike Martin.Liner Note Authors: Alex Smith; Andrew Smith.Recording information: Broom Factory Studios; Jajouka.Photographers: Jessica Shokrian; Alex Smith; Mike Robinson ; Erick Edwards. This fantastic soundtrack to an independent coming-of-age film about a young Montana football player not only includes entries from Bloodshot Records` best and brightest (Ryan Adams, Neko Case, and Blood Oranges, for example), but a beautiful and delicate score by Uncle Tupelo`s Jay Farrar. Farrar`s music, which is interspersed throughout the songs, is so subtle, so emotive, it effortlessly captures the feeling of driving an old car across the bleak, two-lane roads of the Midwest. This record is the sound of traveling, or dreaming of travel at least; the sound of being stuck in the same place for too long; the sound of change. From Vic Chesnutt and Freakwater`s old-timey country to Ryan Adams` freewheeling "To Be Young" (arguably his best tune), The Slaughter Rule is one of the greatest collections of alternative country you`re apt to find. Speedy West & Jimmy Bryant add an oddity with the exotic Pacific sounds of "West of Samoa" and Neko Case grabs the prize for the record`s most sublime and purely powerful cut, "Porchlight." Still, it`s Farrar`s strange and almost surreal, rootsy instrumentals that are really breaking new ground. ~ Charles Spano Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

Taking an organic approach, strings dominate the instrumental tracks that are mostly somber and delicate in nature, keeping in line with the film`s underlying serious theme of a confirmed bachelor facing the unexpected responsibility of fatherhood. Particularly effective is the lullaby-like "It`s a Boy." Ex-E Street rocker Little Steven (with help from Bon Jovi`s Richie Sambora, David Bryan, and Tico Torres) contributes the rootsy ballad "The Time of Your Life," and his performance is surprisingly poignant. The set is rounded out by Marvin Gaye`s smoldering classic "Let`s Get It On" and a yearning turn by soulster Tyrone Davis with the horn-laden "Turn Back the Hands of Time." ~ Tom Demalon Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. $15.53

Personnel: Jay Leonhart (acoustic bass); Joe Williams (vocals); John Bunch, Bill Carlap, Eddie Higgins, Mike LeDonne, Junior Mance, Norman Simmons, Richard Wyands (piano); Gene Bertoncini, Bucky Pizarelli (guitar).Recorded live aboard the S/S Norway between October 26 and November 9, 1996. Includes liner notes by Carolyn Leonhart and Michael Leonhart.Audio Mixer: Jon Bates.Liner Note Authors: Michael Leonhart; Carolyn Leonhart.Recording information: s (10/26/1996-11/09/1996); S Norway, Caribbean Sea (10/26/1996-11/09/1996).Photographer: Rollo Phlecks. In October and November 1996, Jay Leonhart spent two weeks aboard the SS Norway, where he sailed around different parts of the Caribbean and was a prominent performer for the ship`s "jazz cruise." During those two weeks, the acoustic bassist kept busy playing duets with Dave Frishberg and being part of the group New York Swing. Great Duets, however, doesn`t focus on either of those activities, but rather, documents a series of intimate duets Leonhart performed with various pianists and guitarists. Embracing mostly bop, Leonhart is in good form on duets with guitarists Bucky Pizzarelli and Gene Bertoncini as well as pianists ranging from Mike LeDonne and Bill Charlap to John Bunch, Norman Simmons and Richard Wyands. The only vocal comes when Leonhart teams up with Joe Williams on the blues "5 O`Clock in the Morning," which was recorded when the singer was 77. Sadly, Williams` voice had declined considerably, and it`s painfully obvious that he was way past his prime. But apart from Williams` weak performance, this is an enjoyable CD that Leonhart can be proud of. ~ Alex Henderson Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.
