Original Soundtrack – The Wicker Man $14.97 Original score composed by Paul Giovanni.Includes liner notes by Simon Wells and Gary Carpenter. All tracks have been digitally remastered.Liner Note Author: Gary Carpenter. The Trunk Records version of the Wicker Man soundtrack is significantly different from the Silva (U.S.) reissue. The former contains songs, incidental sounds, and short snippets of dialogue taken directly from the original version of the film; that is, what you hear during the film is exactly what you hear on the soundtrack. The effect is similar to a sound collage or field recording. The Silva version, while shorter in length, keeps the songs separate from the incidental sounds, effects, and dialogue, producing a more cohesive (if conventional) listening experience. It also includes the song "Gently Johnny," which appeared in a longer, later cut of the film and was therefore omitted from the original Trunk soundtrack. The other big difference is that the Trunk version is in mono and the Silva version in stereo. Also, despite the addition of "Gently Johnny," the Trunk version is still longer, as it contains much more incidental material. So, which one to buy? Fans of traditional British folk music are advised to pick up the Silva release; soundtrack aficionados and seekers of curious sounds should go with the original on Trunk. Completists, of course, will need both, as each contains exclusive material. In any case, The Wicker Man is a stunning soundtrack. Paul Giovanni, together with Magnet, uses flutes, lyres, harmonicas, and guitars in a mixture of original and traditional material to create a mysterious and sinister world that comes to life apart from the film. ~ Jason Nickey Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Original Soundtrack – The Music Man $7.84 Coming along in the summer of 1962, four and a half years after the Broadway opening, the film version of The Music Man appeared in an era when Hollywood was more likely to be faithful to stage musicals, rather than dramatically altering them, as had been the practice in the past. The Music Man found Robert Preston re-creating his starring role as conman Professor Harold Hill, intent on swindling the good people of River City, IA, by selling them on a fictitious boys` band, and some minor roles were also filled by the Broadway originals. More important, Meredith Willson`s score was rendered intact, the only change being a revision of the song "My White Knight" into "Being in Love." The major casting change was the substitution of Shirley Jones, who had a box-office track record, for Barbara Cook, who did not, in the role of Marian the librarian. Cook may have been preferable, but Jones handled the part well, too. Musically, the big change had to do with scale; the Broadway pit orchestra and original cast were replaced by a vast Hollywood orchestra and chorus, and musical director Ray Heindorf made the most of the larger effects on songs like "Seventy Six Trombones." Still, the music fan who already owned a copy of the original Broadway cast recording didn`t really need to plump for the original motion picture soundtrack, which didn`t keep the album from racing up the charts and going gold as the film became one of the year`s top grossers. But it remains true; unless you are a Shirley Jones fan or want to hear future Andy Griffith Show co-star and film director Ronnie Howard sing "Gary, Indiana" with a lisp, stick to the Broadway version. ~ William Ruhlmann Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Original Soundtrack – Grizzly Man $17.17 Composer: Richard Thompson.Personnel: Richard Thompson (guitar); James ORourke, Jim O`Rourke (guitar, piano); Henry Kaiser (electric guitar); Danielle DeGruttola (cello); Damon Smith (acoustic bass); John Hanes (drums, percussion).Liner Note Author: Werner Herzog.Recording information: Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, CA (12/08/2004/12/09/2004).Arranger: Richard Thompson.Filmmaker Werner Herzog commissioned legendary guitarist Richard Thompson to compose and perform the musical score for his documentary Grizzly Man, about the life and death of Timothy Treadwell, a man who fled society to live among the grizzly bears in the Alaskan wilderness. In the manner of Thompson`s previous film scores, the Grizzly Man album is longer on atmosphere than on songcraft; anyone expecting the British folk-derived melodies of Thompson`s most familiar work will be disappointed, though if you love the expressive modalities of his electric guitar playing, there`s plenty of them on display, and they conjure up the beautiful but dangerous surroundings of Treadwell`s environment very well indeed. Along with some lovely but subdued guitar-based pieces from Thompson, his periodic collaborator Henry Kaiser and Sonic Youth/Wilco interloper Jim O`Rourke sit in for a handful of harsher, atonal pieces that represent the more discordant and unforgiving aspects of life among the bears; fans of Thompson the folkie will probably be turned off by "Big Racket," "Bear Fight," and "Corona for Mr. Chocolate," but those who embraced the expressive angularity of the French-Frith-Kaiser-Thompson recordings will certainly want to hear this. In short, this isn`t an essential Thompson release, but his more discerning fans will find it firmly possessed of the great man`s magic, and it offers a trip down a few paths he doesn`t often visit. ~ Mark Deming Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Original Soundtrack – Man In the Chair $15.54 The 2008 drama MAN IN THE CHAIR features sensitive songs by an array of indie-rock/pop acts. Highlights of the soundtrack include the spare "Santa Maria" by the Frames and the shimmering "All I Can Say" by Zino and Tommy, tunes that perfectly complement Laura Karpman`s moody instrumental score (see the atmospheric electro piece "Lockup"). Original Soundtrack – The Quiet Man $14.06 Original score composed by Victor Young.Performed by The Dublin Screen Orchestra, conducted by Kenneth Alwyn.Recorded at the Factory, Dublin, Ireland on March 26, 1995.John Ford`s 1952 masterpiece The Quiet Man is a far cry from the film director`s usual subject matter, the Old West. But it is a deeply felt work about an Irish-born American boxer who returns home after an early retirement and attempts to reestablish himself in Ireland. The movie has a comic, romantic tone, and its location shooting gives it an authentic air. Not least of the film`s virtues is Victor Young`s score, which is steeped in Irish tunes and other invented melodies that reflect the light mood of the story. Young`s work is spirited and lilting, as much a part of the overall theme as the Irish landscape. Young conducted excerpts from the score for a 10" LP issued at the time of the film`s release, but this 1995 recording by the newly formed Dublin Screen Orchestra under the direction of Kenneth Alwyn is the "first complete recording," as a banner on the cover proclaims. Along with Young`s music, it contains vocal performances of "The Isle of Innisfree," "The Wild Colonial Boy," and "Galway Bay," songs performed in the film. The result is a long-overdue treatment of one of Young`s best scores. ~ William Ruhlmann Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Original Soundtrack – Inside Man $14.14 Composer: Terence Blanchard.Personnel: Terence Blanchard (trumpet); Brice Winston (saxophone); Aaron Parks (piano); Kendrick Scott (drums).Liner Note Author: Terence Blanchard.Recording information: Todd-AO Scoring Stage, Los Angeles, CA.New Orleans trumpeter/composer/bandleader Terence Blanchard re-teamed with longtime collaborator Spike Lee in 2006 for the thriller Inside Man. The film, starring Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, and Jodie Foster, follows a cat and mouse game between a philosophical bank robber and the detectives, lawyers, and bank officials that try and come between them. Blanchard, who spent much of the recording of the movie taking care of property and family members in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, turns in one of his most powerful scores to date, utilizing the expansiveness of Aaron Copland, the action motifs of Hans Zimmer, and the emotionally charged experimentation of Ennio Morricone to produce a work that is as playful and mischievous as it devastating and compelling. ~ James Christopher Monger Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Original Soundtrack – Rain Man $8.47 Producers include: Brian Tench, Hilton Rosenthal, Stock/Aitken/Waterman, Tony Romeo.Compilation producer: Allan Mason. Most of the songs on this soundtrack album are nostalgic pop numbers, either from or in the style of the `50s and `60s (the film takes place in the `80s, but director Barry Levinson used the songs to create a nostalgic mood). The exceptions are the most interesting songs: the Belle Stars perform a lively "Iko Iko," which is an energetic bit of `80s pop. Hans Zimmer`s Oscar-nominated score is performed on the instrument du jour of the 1980s, the electronic keyboard. A dangerous move, considering the synthesizer`s lack of cinematic sweep, and its high potential for cheesiness. But this is a great score. The lonely, atmospheric "End Title" track is evocative of the sort of wistful sadness that pervades the film. And "Las Vegas" is even better — it provides a major adrenaline rush, as driving drum machines mix with wildly emotive wordless vocals. It`s a very original approach to scoring a cinematic moment. ~ Darryl Cater Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Man $17.99 Man: Micky Jones, Deke Leonard (vocals, guitar); Martin Ace (bass); Terry Williams (drums). The group Man evolved from the Bystanders, a mid-’60s Welsh combo whose blend of Beatlesque harmonies and blue-eyed soul yielded a number of well-received singles, most notably the progressive and poppy “Royal Blue Summer Sunshine Day.” That side was indicative of the direction they would take after changing their name to Man. Perhaps due to the eponymous moniker, this album has long been mistaken as a debut effort. However, prior to this title, they had already released a pair of LPs, Revelation (1969) and the somewhat more centered and ambitious follow-up 2 Ozs. of Plastic with a Hole in the Middle (1969). By the time of this platter, Clive John (organ/piano/electric guitar/harpsichord/vocals), Deke Leonard (guitar/vocals), Martin Ace (acoustic guitar/bass guitar/vocals), Terry Williams (percussion/drums), Roger Leonard (acoustic guitar/piano/electric guitar/steel guitar/vocals), and Micky Jones (acoustic guitar/electric guitar/vocals) had settled into what most enthusiasts consider to be a seminal aggregate. In addition to their exceptional improvisational skills, Man would display a more aggressive sound. The opening track, “Romain,” instantly gels into driving blues behind Leonard’s woozy steel guitar interjections. “Country Girl” is reminiscent of the New Riders of the Purple Sage, complete with a distinct West Coast county-rock lilt. Both of the extended pieces, “Would the Christians Wait Five Minutes?…The Lions Are Having a Draw” and “Alchemist” are pastiches of well-developed instrumentals, although at times they come off as somewhat dated. There is plenty of inspired interaction, however, especially on the latter song as they unleash some definitive heavy metal licks that could easily be mistaken for seminal Black Sabbath. “Daughter of the Fireplace” is another highlight as a compact and attitude-heavy rocker. [Interested parties should note that Repertoire's CD reissue of Man (2003) augments the original five cuts with the 45 rpm edits/mixes of "Daughter of the Fireplace" -- which has been amended from five-minutes-and-19-seconds to just under three minutes -- and "Country Girl [Single Version].” The audio is exceptional and the liner booklet includes a short essay by noted musicologist Chris Welch.] ~ Lindsay Planer |

Spider-Man 2 [Original Soundtrack] $6.99 Composer: Danny Elfman.Since Hollywood movie soundtracks often feature music that is popular during the release of the attendant film, delving into the soundtrack category is a great way to hear what teenagers are into at a particular pop-culture moment. As such, the original SPIDER-MAN movie featured a preponderance of nu-metal and neo-grunge that was not only appropriate to the film’s fast-action pace, but also wildly popular in 2002.Times and tastes change, though, and for 2004’s SPIDER-MAN 2, Chad Kroeger, Alien Ant Farm, and Black Lab are replaced by equally energetic, but decidedly less metallic delegates from the pop (Train, Maroon 5), rock (the Ataris, Jet), and emo (Dashboard Confessional, Midtown) camps. After a quick old-guard showing from Smile Empty Soul, the disc wraps up with several bits of score music from the timelessly appropriate Danny Elfman. A good aural representation of both the super-hero and shy-student sides of the Spider-Man/Peter Parker dichotomy, this soundtrack is an exciting listen for mainstream music fans and Spidey buffs alike. |
