J.M.W. Turner - $14.99 Often incorrectly associated with the Impressionist School of art, Joseph Mallord William Turner in fact qualified as a harbinger of that movement; though similar to artists such as Monet and Renoir, the style that Turner exhibited actually predated the others by decades. Throughout Turner’s career, he specialized in depicting seascapes, and exercised an unusual combination of luminescent and atmospheric elements; perhaps as a result, art historians now regard him as one of the preeminent English landscape painters. The National Gallery documentary program J.M.W. Turner carries audiences on a painting-by-painting retrospective of the artist’s work, set to music and intercut with on-camera trips to the locales Turner inhabited. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi |

Her confessional style remains engaging, charming, and rarely self-indulgent. Williams tackles delicate subjects skillfully. On "As Cool as I Am," for instance, she sings about female jealousy and feelings of inadequacy in male-female relationships. Threatened by a woman who seems to have caught the attention of her lover, Williams wrestles with her own insecurity. Williams emerges victorious, ultimately declaring that she will not be afraid of women and won`t allow her herself be intimidated by them. "The Christians and the Pagans" tells of a woman`s Christmastime visit to a relative`s house-with her female companion. Family members are miffed (the subject and her buddy are said "pagans"), but Williams` subtle humor and keen sense of melody win the day-and propel the song. A strong second set, MORTAL CITY proves that Williams is a formidable talent who won`t be disappearing anytime soon. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Tony Williams Lifetime – Emergency $11.89 Tony Williams Lifetime: Tony Williams (drums); Larry Young (organ); John McLaughlin (guitar).Reissue producer: Jerry Rappaport.Recorded at Olmstead Sound Studios, New York, New York on May 26 & 28, 1969. Originally released on Polydor (25-3001). Includes liner notes by Ralph J. Gleason and John McDermott.Digitally remastered by Gary N. Mayo at Polygram Studios.During Tony Williams` stint with Miles Davis, he displayed an unparalleled mastery of time and texture, suggesting at once the meter-less pulsations of Milford Graves and Sonny Murray, and the polyrhythmic swing of Max Roach, Art Blakey and Philly Joe Jones. The Davis rhythm section (Williams, bassist Ron Carter, pianist Herbie Hancock) learned to superimpose fresh harmonies and rhythms on top of a flexible basic pulse, driven along by the drummer`s percolating hi-hat. And when the band broke up, each member gravitated towards some aspect of the emerging new pop music: The Beatles, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix. And if Herbie felt the funk, Tony wanted to rock, and to that end he formed the most slamming, freewheeling organ trio in the history of jazz. From the heraldic overture of the title tune, to the epic drum variations of "Something Special," EMERGENCY signals a shift in consciousness. A time warp as it were, as if the autumn of 1945 merged with the summer of 1969, and the rhythmic, harmonic and melodic innovations of Charlie Parker`s bebop morphed with the acetylene blues roar of Jimi Hendrix and Cream. Yet EMERGENCY is not really a Rock album, but loud jazz with an attitude. The power of EMERGENCY is in the playing; because for his Lifetime, Williams recruited the most innovative of all Philly organ players, the Coltraneish virtuoso Larry Young, and an exciting young veteran of the British jazz and blues scene–and Jimmy Page`s mentor–John McLaughlin. On "Spectrum," Young sets an imposing tempo with his bass pedals and left hand, supercharged by Williams` indomitable cymbal pulse and outrageous cross-rhythms. McLaughlin doubles up on the blistering tempo with soaring blues phrases, jagged syncopations and fearless harmonic detours. Young responds with one of the great organ solos of all time, transcending Hammond cliches with his elongated melodic elisions and cathartic chordal crescendos, and Williams ups the rhythmic ante with melodic variations of his own. This level of pure excitement carries over to the flamenco furies of "Where" and "Sangria For Three," and the dervish dance of "Vashkar."Tony Williams` Emergency was one of the first and most influential albums in late-`60s fusion, a record that shattered the boundaries between jazz and rock. Working with guitarist John McLaughlin and organist Larry Young, Williams pushed into new territory, creating dense, adventurous, unpredictable soundscapes. With Emergency, Tony Williams helped create the foundation of the style and sound of fusion. It`s a seminal release, originally release |

Josh Williams – Lonesome Highway * $12.62 Personnel: Josh Williams and High Gear (vocals, baritone, guitar, mandolin); Don Rigsby (tenor, baritone); Dwight McCall (tenor); Otis Dillon (bass voice); Randy Kohrs (guitar); J.D. Crowe, Kristin Scott Benson (banjo); Ron Stewart (fiddle); Missy Raines (acoustic bass).Liner Note Authors: Josh Williams and High Gear; Jon Weisberger.Recording information: Brickshy Audio, Liepers Fork, TN; River Track Recording Stuiod, Fort Gay, WV.Photographer: Michael "Mick" Wilson. When bluegrassers like Alison Krauss and Rhonda Vincent choose good musicians to fill out their bands, it`s inevitable that these players will branch out on their own at some point. Dan Tyminski found an identity separate from Krauss in the wake of O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and now Josh Williams steps out of Vincent`s shadow on Lonesome Highway. This guy is so talented that he often plays guitar and mandolin, sings lead and baritone — all on the same track. He`s nonetheless joined by a handful of other players and singers including bassist Missy Raines, vocalist Don Rigsby, and fiddler Ron Stewart. Like Krauss and Vincent, Williams specializes in contemporary bluegrass, meaning that his vocals on "Killer on the Loose" and "Ol` Brown Suitcase" are closer to Ralph Stanley II than Ralph Stanley. Having said this, Williams is still old-fashioned enough to cover Flatt & Scruggs` "The Legend of the Johnson Boys," throw in an instrumental like "Golden Pond Getaway," and include the obligatory gospel number, "Will You Meet Me Over There." There are several songs, including "Down Another Lonesome Highway," that explore the downside of love, but it would be hard to call this album downbeat. Fans of Krauss, Vincent, and Tyminski will enjoy discovering another new voice on the contemporary bluegrass scene. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. Mason Williams – Electrical Gas * $14.47 Personnel: Alan Steele (guitar); Art Ellis (flute); Hal Blaine (drums); Andy Narrell (steel drum). From the album title you have a pretty good clue as to what`s in the package: an electric version of the Mason Williams classic. But it`s not too electric — Zoe McCulloch shows great restraint throughout, working over the tune rather than dominating it, and giving a more contemporary feel to everything. That`s true for much of the album, in fact, the two guitars complementing rather than fighting each other. She does let loose a bit on "Gypsy Noodle," which has a prog rock lite feel, and gets to show that she has some serious chops. "Destinations of the Sun" offers a bit of a Caribbean tour, with everything from Brazilian rhythms to steel pan along with the guitars. It`s a bit of a mishmash, but it works. "Eddie I`m Ready," which is essentially a `50s chord progression, is a sweetly sentimental piece, both in its instrumental and vocal versions — pleasant enough, but lacking in real inspiration. At times the orchestrations go a little over the top (less, rather than more, would have worked better), but the joy is the way the two lead instrumentalists work together. ~ Chris Nickson Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Paul Williams & The Victory Trio – What A Journey [9/9] $13.7 Personnel: Paul Williams (vocals, tenor, mandolin); Adam Winstead, Dan Moneyhun (vocals, guitar); Paul Williams (vocals, mandolin); Jerry Keys (banjo); Keith Williams, Keith Williams (fiddle); Susie Keys (acoustic bass).Audio Mixer: Alan Maggard.Recording information: Maggard Sound Studio, Big Stone Gap, VA.Bluegrass gospel outfit Paul Williams and the Victory Trio`s WHAT A JOURNEY is a throwback to the early years of country gospel. Mixing originals and standards so craftily that all the songs sound as if they were written and recorded in the 1930s, the drummerless Victory Trio (banjo, guitar and fiddle) and Williams`s keening lead vocals are pure, sweet country gospel, making WHAT A JOURNEY as appealing to the O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU crowd as it is to the traditional country gospel audience. Hank Williams, Jr. – Family Tradition $5.98 Producers: Ray Ruff, Jimmy Bowen, Phil Gernhard. This is part of Curb`s Bocephus series.Audio Remasterer: Craig White.FAMILY TRADITION is state-of-the-art late-`70s country music. In other words, this isn`t exactly the sort of album that screams "Are you ready for some football?" Regardless, this is one of Williams` best, if least characteristic, efforts. The strongest song is "I`ve Got Rights," a revenge fantasy written from the perspective of a man whose wife and child were murdered by somebody who later beat the rap on a technicality. It`s powerful stuff, hardly conducive to getting rowdy. Elsewhere, Williams turns in a soulful reading of the Bee Gees` "To Love Somebody," does a slow and funky version of Bobby Fuller`s oft-covered "I Fought the Law" (a smart choice, given Williams` public persona), and takes some good-natured swipes at his Nashville detractors in the title song. Hank Williams – The Original Singles Collection [Box] $33.62 This 3-CD/cassette box set contains 63 singles sides (A & B), 4 studio session recordings, and 17 non-session demos, all arranged in chronological order. The set also includes a book featuring many previously unpublished photos, detailed information on the original releases, and a 6000-word essay on Hank`s career by Colin Escott. All recordings are from original, undubbed masters.Digitally remastered by Dennis Drake and Scott Hull (Polygram Studios and Masterdisk, New York).During his all-too-brief six-year career, Hank Williams Sr. mastered the art of the single as would few artists before or after. Between March 1949 and June 1953 (six months after his death), Williams held the number one spot on the Billboard country singles chart for a phenomenal 82 weeks. Only three artists in country music history (Eddy Arnold, Webb Pierce, Buck Owens) have matched or bettered this accomplishment. More impressive still is the enduring quality of Williams` songs and recordings. Arnold`s and Pierce`s records today interest old-timers and hardcore country aficionados only. Williams` records, by contrast, continue to sell briskly, a testament to his powers as both a singer and a songwriter.ORIGINAL SINGLES COLLECTION…PLUS gathers all of Williams` 78s and 45s (plus 16 non-single songs performed solo) on one three-CD set. The result is a thorough chronological overview of Williams` phenomenal career, from its tentative beginnings to his first big hit ("Lovesick Blues," a non-original that held the number one spot for 16 weeks) through what could have been an endless stream of classic honky-tonk had Williams survived his addictions. The accompanying booklet includes many photos and a long essay by country scholar Colin Escott. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Landmarks of Western Art, Vol. 5: Romanticism - $14.99 Viewers can discover the art of the Romantics in volume five of a six-volume series on western art from the extraordinary use of light by English landscape artist J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) to Spain’s Francisco Goya (1746-1828), whose paintings forced the viewer to face life’s inhumanity, to Frenchman Theodore Gericault’s (1791-1824) portraits of the mentally ill. This 50-minute program illustrates how Romanticism was a rebellion against the academic and rational thought of Neoclassicism, how the artwork from the late 18th century to the mid-19th century embodied melancholy, nostalgia, and romantic imagery with an irrational and subjective approach. ~ Brooke Hodess, Rovi |

Paul Williams (Pop) – Here Comes Inspiration $21.99 Personnel: Paul Williams (vocals); Art Munson, Ron Davies (guitar); John Morell (12-string guitar); Al Hendrickson (banjo, ukulele); Gerald Vinci, Jerome Reisler, Wilbert Nuttycombe, George Kast, Irving Geller, Marshall Sosson, William Henderson , Marilyn Baker, Arnold Belnick, Nathan Ross, Sheldon Sanov (violin); Allan Harshman, Samuel Boghossian (viola); Raymond Kelley, Douglas Davies, Edgar Lustgarten (cello); Don Menza, Charles Harrington (piccolo); Tom Junior Morgan (harmonica); Tom Scott (clarinet); Warren Luening (trumpet, cornet); Conte Candoli (trumpet); Chuck Findley, Marvin Stamm (flugelhorn); Alan Robinson (French horn); Dick Nash (trombone); Kenny Ascher (piano); Dave Garland (organ); Richard Feves, Oscar Meza, Buell Neidlinger (double bass); Gary Mallaber (drums, percussion); Victor Feldman, Alan Estes, Gary Coleman (percussion); Gene Morford, Stan Farber, Tom Bahler, Ron Hicklin (background vocals).Audio Remixer: Tommy Vicari.Recording information: A&M Studios, Hollywood, CA.Photographer: Suzanne Ayres.Arrangers: George Tipton; Kenny Ascher. Here Comes Inspiration is one of Williams` better albums. It revisits all of his strongest artistic points, and includes dreamy, whimsical high points like "Rainy Days and Mondays," "Driftwood," and "You and Me Against the World." His voice is certainly still a weak, bleating non-instrument, but here it`s never dishonest or insincere. As usual, he`s supported by the finest session musicians money can buy and an orchestra whose subtle arrangements never overpower the songs. Most of the material is written by Williams alone (with occasional co-writes from producer Ken Asher). Listeners may prefer the more professional performances of the Carpenters and Helen Reddy, who`ve recorded a number of the titles (Reddy recorded no less than four of them), but there`s a more raw, affecting quality to these original renditions. ~ Charles Donovan Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005.
