Jimi Hendrix David Byrd Fillmore East Poster $38.00 Jimi Hendrix liked Byrd’s drawing on this poster so much that he later asked the artist to design a press kit cover for him. Byrd used a drop-bow compass to draw the little circles, and he labored to get Hendrix’s hair “… Just right.” Hendrix was at the height of his career in mid-1968, and he did two shows for the one-night-only concert. Sly & the Family Stone, not mentioned on the poster, was … |

Jimi Hendrix Rick Griffin Flying Eyeball Fillmore Poster $48.00 Jimi Hendrix and the Flying Eyeball are images indelibly linked in the psychedelic poster art of the late Rick Griffin. Griffin discovered The Eyeball, in a much more benign form, in the 1950s auto detailing art of California pinstriper Von Dutch and reworked it over time to become the winged, bloodshot figure parting a ring of fire with serpent-like tentacles. Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music Director’s Cut (40th Anniversary Two-Disc Special Edition) $6.43 The three-day Woodstock music festival in 1969 was the pivotal event of the 1960s peace movement, and this landmark concert film is the definitive record of that milestone of rock & roll history. It’s more than a chronicle of the hippie movement, however; this is a film of genuine historical and social importance, capturing the spirit of America in transition, when the Vietnam War was at its peak … |

Where the Buffalo Roam $7.03 Bill Murray is in his early-career, shambling glory as Hunter S. Thompson, the gonzo journalist with a fondness for Wild Turkey and firearms. While Murray does not do as exact an impersonation of Thompson as Johnny Depp (in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas), he does capture Thompson’s dazed, anarchic nature. Unfortunately, the movie around him is just anarchic: a series of episodes (true or invente… |

Jimi Hendrix: Live at the Fillmore East - $14.99 One of the most exciting and innovative musicians in rock history, Jimi Hendrix rang in the year 1970 with four shows at New York’s Filmore East, in which he performed with his new group The Band of Gypsies, who expanded Jimi’s hard-rock style into a sound that embraced a wider range of R&B and Funk influences. This video collects rare footage from the two night stand at Filmore East, as well as interviews with Band Of Gypsies members Billy Cox and Buddy Miles, Jimi Hendrix Experience bandmates Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding, and recording engineer Eddie Kramer, who worked with Hendrix on many of his original recordings. Selections include “Fire,” “Machine Gun,” “Foxy Lady” and “Who Knows.” ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Jimi Hendrix: Rainbow Bridge - $14.99 In this exercise in cinematic psychedelia (it’s a classic example of the sort of film that only seems to have found wide release in the late 1960s or early 1970s), a group of young people looking to expand their consciousness arrive at the Rainbow Bridge Occult Meditation Center in Hawaii. They get to know each other and exchange ideas about any number of profound subjects, but the real action starts about 40 minutes into the picture when Jimi Hendrix shows up to play a concert for the participants. This show turned out to be Hendrix’s last live concert in the United States, and he and bassist Billy Cox and drummer Mitch Mitchell perform “Foxy Lady,” “Voodoo Chile (Slight Return),” “Purple Haze,” “Get My Heart Back Together,” and “Hear My Train A’Comin’.” Rainbow Bridge also features an interview with Hendrix, in which he discusses music and philosophy. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Jimi Hendrix: Experience - $14.99 This 1967 theatrical release comes to video via Warner Home Video. Live concert footage, rare studio glimpses, and interviews round out the contents of this collection. “Wild Thing,” “Purple Haze,” and “Hear My Train a Comin’” (acoustic version) were all recorded live on stage with the quality of sound and video that suggest they could be bootleg material. A break from live footage appears in “Foxy Lady,” one of Hendrix’s best-known hits, which is filmed more like a music video — on location and in 8 mm. The program includes brief one-on-one interviews with Jimi Hendrix, Noel Redding, and Mitch Mitchell. Some of the material, such as “Hear My Train a Comin’,” has appeared on other video releases. ~ Karen Solomon, Rovi |

Jimi Hendrix: The Last 24 Hours - $14.99 In 1967, after years of scuffling on the R&B circuit and backing up the likes of Little Richard and the Isley Brothers, guitarist Jimi Hendrix became an overnight sensation with the released of his startlingly accomplished debut album, Are You Experienced. In the fall of 1970 Hendrix died, and from the moment his passing was announced, the sad matter became a subject of controversy as various parties argued over the cause of his death, who (if anyone) might be responsible, and who would inherit the rights to his musical legacy. Jimi Hendrix: The Last 24 Hours is a documentary which offers an in-depth look at the artist’s last day and attempts to clear the air surrounding his tragic passing, and includes appearances from Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Pete Townshend. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Classic Albums: Jimi Hendrix – Electric Ladyland – Dolby $9.99 This documentary examines the making of the critically acclaimed, multi-platinum Jimi Hendrix double album Electric Ladyland. Televised initially on VH1 and then on PBS, the Rhino Home Video release of this program contains additional footage not seen on the TV version. The story is told using archival film clips, the diary of one of Hendrix’s employees, demos, live performances, home movies, and still photos, intercut with interviews featuring bandmembers Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell, singer/keyboard player Stevie Winwood, engineer Eddie Kramer, and Hendrix’s manager, Chas Chandler (in his final interview). Hendrix produced Electric Ladyland himself, and the 1968 LP contained his biggest hit — a cover of the Bob Dylan song “All Along the Watch Tower,” as well as “Voodoo Child (Slight Return),” which later covered by Stevie Ray Vaughan. Named after Hendrix’s New York studio where it was recorded, Electric Ladyland featured guest performances by Buddy Miles, Steve Winwood, Jack Casady, Dave Mason, Chris Wood, and Al Cooper. ~ Steve Blackburn, Rovi |
