The Big Huge $12.99 Although issued as a separate release in the U.S., The Big Huge is actually the second-disc counterpart of Wee Tam. The set appeared as a two-LP package throughout the rest of the world. Understandably, the albums are very similar in structure and content. This quartet incarnation of the Incredible String Band featured primary songwriters Robin Williamson and Mike Heron as well as their significant others, Christina “Liquorice” McKechnie and Rose Simpson. The ISB’s tradition of quirky, and at times atonal, acoustic material is well served by the nine compositions on this platter. The lengthy opening track, “Maya,” foreshadows their less-focused upcoming works I Looked Up and U. Although there are a few moments of brilliant playing, the ambling nature of the song overall makes for difficult consumption during a single sitting. The remainder of the record — while similar in unfettered spirit — contains decidedly more cohesive pieces, a few of which are among the ISB’s most lauded compositions. These include the pastoral “Greatest Friend” and a dirge-like “The Circle Is Unbroken.” “Lordly Nightshade” contains a few 20th century references — such as Hitler, who is likewise mentioned in “Maya.” The minstrel storytelling quality adds an ethereal sense to the darkly toned subject matter. The vocal harmonies throughout The Big Huge are among the quartet’s finest — most notably the four-part division on “The Mountain of God” and the deceptively simple and silly “Cousin Caterpillar.” After several years out of print, Collectors’ Choice Music reissued both Wee Tam and The Big Huge as a double-CD set — including the original LP graphics and lyrics. ~ Lindsay Planer |

Original Four Seasons $14.99 The main question here is what they mean by “original,” since this performance is based on the usual version of Vivaldi’s famous set of concertos. What is different is that this is not Vivaldi’s original, but an arrangement, though not one that departs much from what one would normally hear. Toying with these pieces is commonplace in modern baroque practice, since it is believed Vivaldi expected his soloists to embellish their lines. Nigel Kennedy’s popular recording took quite a few liberties; Vanessa-Mae is perhaps a little more ostentatious than most when it comes to ornamentation, and the improvising extends to the ensemble at large, but it’s still pretty much Vivaldi’s ‘Four Seasons’ played by a talented extrovert with a somewhat romantic attitude. Much the same could be said of the ensemble arrangement of Tartini’s ‘Devil’s Trill’ Sonata, but the dance-beat arrangement of material from that work is not to be missed, perhaps the highlight of the disc. |

Dardanus (Original Version) $32.99 This selection received a Grammy Award nomination for “Best OperaRecording.”Rameau’s opera ‘Dardanus’ was a greatly anticipated salvo in the theoretical war raging in Parisian music scene of the 1730s. Rameau was the father of modern theoretical harmony, based on the triad rather than melodic motion. Despite his professed affinity for Lully’s music, devotees of Lully found Rameau’s music difficult, theoretical and unnatural. This is nearly impossible to discern today; ‘Dardanus’ is an extremely congenial work to modern listeners, accustomed as we are to the legacy of Rameau’s harmonic theory which provided the foundation for most music until the Twentieth Century put tremendous cracks in traditional harmonic structure.Marc Minkowski, a self-taught conductor, and his ensemble, Les Musiciens Du Louvre, have risen to international respect as specialists in the performance of Baroque music on original instruments. This is an excellently balanced recording, and because the sound of period brass instruments can be somewhat prohibitive to modern listeners, the relative lack of brass writing in this work may prove refreshing to some.REVIEWS:International Record Review (6/00, pp.114-115) – “…[V?ronique Gens and Mireille Delunsch] are both in marvellous voice and ideally complementary in sound….[John Mark Ainsley] is consistently fresh in tone and plangent when necessary….All the remaining parts are strongly cast…” |

Josie and the Pussycats [Original Soundtrack] $6.99 Original score cmposed by John Frizzell.Even though Rachael Leigh Cook, Tara Reid, and Rosario Dawson bring the cartoon musical group Josie And The Pussycats to life on the silver screen, their collective non-musical talents forced executive music producer Babyface and wife Tracy Edmonds to create a post-millennial version of the Monkees. Former Letters To Cleo frontwoman Kay Hanley provides the voice of Josie, while original songs like “3 Small Words,” “Shapeshifter,” and “Pretend to Be Nice” turn out to be the kind of sugar-coated guitar-driven alt-pop that conjures up images of ’90s stalwarts Belly and Veruca Salt. The songwriting and recording contributions from members of Fountains Of Wayne, Counting Crows, the Go-Go’s, and Matthew Sweet also cinch the power-pop karma coursing through this hook-laden project. Chugging covers of “Real Wild Child,” the Motown standard “Money,” and the band’s theme song are the Jolt cola accompanying the Pop Rocks sensibility of these whip-smart songs. The only non-Josie cuts are by DuJour, another fictional band in the film, who come across as a modern-day Blackstreet for the teen crowd thanks to jams like “Dujour Around the World” and “Backdoor Lover.” |

Kingdom Come [Original Soundtrack] $6.99 Original score composed by Kirk Franklin.Engineers include: Chris Godbey, Steve Gallagher, Mike Dy.Recorded at Beach Street, Inglewood, California, Dallas Sound Lab, Nomad Studios, Dallas, Texas.A movie starring Whoopi Goldberg, Jada Pinkett, and LL Cool J among others, Kingdom Come’s soundtrack is refreshingly low-key, with notable contributions from the films originator, Kirk Franklin, and Jill Scott, in addition to a host of lesser known but no less talented acts.Shawn Stockman’s “Stand” is particularly poignant; like all the best gospel, it could easily double as a pop song. Snappy beats and modern R&B production techniques abound–there’s only one traditional sounding gospel number here, the swaying “God’s Got it All in Control,” with time-honored piano and hushed organ accompaniment building to a climactic finish. KINGDOM COME is a great stand-alone collection–about the biggest compliment you can pay to a soundtrack album. |

The Fruit of the Original Sin $20.99 The second compilation released by the Belgian label Crepescule in the early ’80s, and easily the most ambitious of its earliest such efforts, The Fruit of the Original Sin at the time acted as a sprawling catchall that drew together many different strands of what could be called post-punk and art rock from all over Europe and North America. From a distance, it’s even more of an astonishing effort, thanks not only to the many bands and performers who appeared and later established strong reputations worldwide, but the sheer, surprising range of who appeared. If there’s an exact modern equivalent to a collection that starts with a discordant modern jazz/classical composition (Peter Gordon’s martial title track) and includes not only live poetry snippets (William S. Burroughs’ “Twilight’s Last Gleaming,” an often uproarious recording that concluded the original release) but an interpretation of Claude Debussy (Cecile Bruynoghe’s “Clair de Lune”) and an extended interview with a noted author, in this case French writer Marguerite Duras — with piano accompaniment after the fact from Virginia Astley, no less — then it’s not received the attention it should. It’s all the more impressive given that Crepescule was still just starting out in ways, but if one needed proof of the success of the D.I.Y. ethic well beyond punk crash and bash, it’s here. A couple of the contributors who appeared were utterly obscure then and now but the amount of downright legendary folks who had some of their earliest — or even debut — recordings here reads like an honor list. The Durutti Column’s elegant entries include “The Eye and the Hand” and “Experiment in Fifth”; DNA’s three short pieces show off their moody, understated aggro side well, all scraping guitar and driving bass; Arthur Russell’s “Sketch for ‘Face of Helen’” is an unsurprisingly captivating take on a gentle drone melody mixed with distant fuzz; and Wim Mertens’ minimal string quartet composition “Multiple 12″ rivals it for beauty. Paul Haig’s “Mad Horses” is an odd number even for him, a minimal slice of motorik funk that later generations would call lo-fi. Meanwhile, the number of artists who barely got beyond one album, if even that, but ended up getting plenty of cult attention as time passed is also striking — Marine pop up a couple of times, most notably with the skittery funk of “Animal in My Head,” while the French Impressionists have a slightly louche ball early on with “Boo Boo’s Gone Mambo/My Guardian Angel.” Having released various tracks from the album on single-artist compilations and reissues over the years, LTM finally issued a full two-CD re-release of the compilation in 2007, including a further eight bonus tracks from related releases or compilations at the time. Paul Haig reappears with two obscure Rhythm of Life tracks, the Durutti Column’s “Weakness and Fever,” an alternate recording of “Smile in This Crowd,” takes a bow, while Peter Gordon’s collaboration with artist Lawrence Weiner |

Ayurveda: Art of Being [Original Soundtrack] $17.99 Original score composed by Cyril Morin.Cyril Morin.Personnel: Christine Kotschi (violin, bamboo flute, duduk).Audio Mixers: Cyril Morin; Bruno Merc?re.Liner Note Author: Pan Nalin.Photographer: Albert Watson .Unknown Contributor Role: Vidya Rao.Arranger: Cyril Morin. This soundtrack accompanies AYURVEDA: ART OF BEING, a documentary about the ancient Indian system of natural healthcare. Composer Cyril Morin blends Eastern melodies, traditional vocals, and instruments with modern rhythms and keyboards in a broad palette that reflects the balance and richness of the Ayurvedan elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space. At times the effects are stunningly simple as in the flute dialogue in “Vatta – Air and Ether” and, in others, a layered tapestry of dynamic elements, such as in the deeply enchanting symphony of “Five Elements.” |

The Huge World of Emily Small $17.99 The Picadilly Line’s sole album is one of the recordings that most epitomizes what has been retrospectively dubbed the “toytown” school of British psychedelia by collectors. That is, the songs bounce along daintily; the vocal emphasis is on high harmonies; the lyrics are sometimes populated with observations of British everyday life and characters, sprinkled with a coat of whimsy; and the arrangements benefit from touches of baroque orchestration. It’s executed here, however, with a fey, twee touch that makes the Zombies’ Odessey and Oracle, for instance, sound rough ‘n’ ready by comparison. It’s thus going to be too light even for some British psychedelic pop enthusiasts, but it’s not quite the most saccharine entry in the genre, though it’s undeniably precious. There’s a folky lightness that keeps this from being too wide-eyed and childish, sometimes sounding a bit like Simon & Garfunkel gone toytown, though with some similarities to both the 1967-era Beatles and ’60s California pop in the vocals and arrangements. The covers of Bob Dylan’s “Visions of Johanna” and the Everly Brothers’ “Gone, Gone, Gone,” however, seem misplaced in these surroundings. The CD reissue adds ten bonus cuts of a similar nature (though they’re sometimes marginally gutsier) and the same level of professionalism, including all three of their non-LP cuts that appeared on singles in 1968. Of these, the one of most interest is “Yellow Rainbow,” as it was written by Graham Nash, then of the Hollies. Unsurprisingly, it sounds much like a Hollies song given a lighter treatment than the Hollies themselves would have; also unsurprisingly, to be a little uncharitable, it’s by far the best track on the CD. ~ Richie Unterberger |

Incredible Hulk: Original Television Premiere – Fullscreen Subtitle $8.99 Includes:The Incredible Hulk (1977) Bride of the Incredible Hulk (1978) The Incredible Hulk The Incredible Hulk, the live-action TV series based on the popular Marvel Comics character, was preceded by a 2-hour TV-movie pilot. Bill Bixby stars as Dr. David Banner (Bruce Banner in the original comic books), a scientist whose experimentation with gamma rays has a most dramatic effect. Whenever his anger is aroused, Dr. Banner turns into a huge, green, rampaging monstrosity called the Hulk (played by bodybuilder Lou Ferrigno). Unjustly accused of being a criminal in his “Hulk” guise, Dr. Banner is forced to take it on the lam. In Fugitive fashion, the subsequent series found Dr. Banner and his alter-ego Hulk helping people in distress. Written, produced and directed by Kenneth Johnson, the Incredible Hulk pilot was first broadcast November 4, 1977. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Bride of the Incredible Hulk No synopsis available. |

History of Modern [LP] [PA] $22.98 Full performer name: Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (O.M.D.).A 2005 appearance on a German television program, followed by a tour — throughout which the original four members performed 1981’s Architecture & Morality in its entirety — culminated in the first OMD album since 1996 (and this particular quartet’s first since 1986). History of Modern, for the most part, sounds like OMD. There are two exceptions: “Sometimes” incorporates turntable scratching and guest vocalist Jennifer John, who interjects with lines from “Motherless Child,” while “Pulse” is neo-electro sleaze, full of bedroom whispers, moans, and yearning yelps. Most updates to the group’s sound are natural, while the placid ballad “New Holy Ground” and the somehow cathartic and pensive “Green” rate with the earlier material. At its best, History of Modern is to OMD what Secrets is to the Human League: an inspired return from post-punk-turned-synth-pop greats. ~ Andy Kellman |
