Hamilton Loomis – Kickin` It *

$15.85

Personnel: Hamilton Loomis (vocals, guitar, harmonica, vocodor, bass); Brant Leeper (piano, keyboards, background vocals); Mike Cross (bass, background vocals); Nico Leophonte, Levi Haddock III (drums); The Primal Funk Horns.Recorded at Congress House, Austin, Texas and The Lodge Studios, Nashville, Tennessee.Personnel: Hamilton Loomis (vocals, guitar, harmonica, vocoder, sound effects); Kevin Needham (tenor saxophone); Brant Leeper (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, background vocals); Nico Leophonte, Levi "The Hammer" Haddock III (drums).Audio Mixer: Hamilton Loomis.Liner Note Author: Hamilton Loomis.Recording information: Congress House Studios, Austin, TX; The Lodge Studios, Nashville, TN.Photographer: Bill Olive.Arranger: Hamilton Loomis.Young Texas guitarist Hamilton Loomis` first disc for Blind Pig, Kickin` It, is a mixed bag of modern blues, modern funk, and slick soul. As a young man getting started in the blues, Loomis was mentored by Lone Star State legends Albert Collins, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, and Johnny Copeland. He seems proud to use those names in interviews and press releases, and rightfully so! You sense he is genuinely honored to have been taken under the wing of these elder statesmen. So, it comes as a bit of a surprise in the Kickin` It liner notes when Loomis brags, "This ain`t yo` Grandpa`s blues record," and how he`s going to take "blues out of the box." If you associate Loomis` mentors with "grandpa`s blues record," you probably won`t get much enjoyment from Kickin` It. ~ Al Campbell Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. Young enough to be part of the generation of players influenced by John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, and Ornette Coleman, he draws his primary inspiration from an earlier generation of saxophonists. Don Byas, Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins and, of course, Lester Young–the big-toned, warm, breathy tenor giants of the `30s and `40s–are the icons that fire Hamilton`s approach. BALLAD ESSENTIALS is a superb cross-section of his work, recorded with various lineups for the Concord label between 1977 and 1995.Unsurprisingly, the program is all standards, rendered with fabulous technique and delivered with genuine, unabashedly sentimental warmth. Hamilton`s version of "Everything Happens To Me" could have melted the iceberg in TITANIC; his horn sings over a lush string section in an Alan Broadbent arrangement of "My Foolish Heart," and his transformation of Thelonious Monk`s "Round Midnight" stands with any recorded version. Also featured are the great trad/swing pianists John Bunch and Dave McKenna, and fellow tenor Ken Peplowski. Innovative? Not exactly. Timeless swing/jazz ballads played with breathtaking beauty? Absolutely. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

For most listeners, this is all the Hewett that`s necessary, and by adding these unofficial Hewett recordings to the repertoire, they`ve made this the kind of record that`s essential for most of the

The fifth film in a series based on the best-selling novels of Scandinavian author Jan Guillou, Hamilton follows the exploits of Swedish super-agent Carl Hamilton and stars Mark Hamill as the villain. The CIA discovers a stolen missile being routed through the Arctic by Russian rebels. Since they plan to smuggle it into Sweden, the Swedish secret service is called in. After Hamilton (Peter Stormare) and his men kill the smugglers, Hamilton realizes it was a set-up, since another missile went into Sweden. He follows the trail to Murmansk where he meets ex-CIA operative Mike Hawkins (Hamill) — and the search continues in Stockholm, and Washington, before the final confrontation in Libya. This 127-minute feature was trimmed down from a four-part TV miniseries. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

Howard & The White Boys - Strung Out On The Blues

Howard & The White Boys – Strung Out On The Blues

$14.1

Personnel: Howard McCullum (vocals); Dan Bellini (guitar, harmonica); Steve Asma (guitar); John Brumbach (tenor saxophone); Dez Desormeaux (baritone saxophone); Rob Mazurek (trumpet); Erwin Helfer (piano); Dave Friebolin (keyboards); Jim "Bucka" Christopulos (drums).Audio Mixer: Fred Breitberg.Liner Note Author: Kevin Toelle.Recording information: Jordan Studio, Wheaton, IL; Streeterville Studios, Chicago, IL.Photographer: Kate Hoddinott.Fourteen high energy blues tracks played by Howard McCullum (vocalist/bassist), Dan Bellini (guitarist & harmonica player), Jim Christopulos (drummer), and guitarist Steve Asma. "She Can Cook" contains all the elements of good blues, humor, good playing, heartfelt singing, realistic lyrics about a woman who`s not a beauty queen, or a whole host of other things, but can cook. Some songs, like "Nightmare Man," are as much Country as Blues. However, they never stray far from genuine blues as is evident with "Baby`s Painting The Town," "Turn On Your Love Light," "Black Cat," and two pile drivers: "Strung Out On The Blues," and "The Blues Are Killing Me." Bellini displays his mouth harp skills on "I`m Gonna Hate Myself In The Morning," and a guitarist plays some saucy riffs on "Let Me Be Your Slave." They give Jimmy Reeds` "I Got My Mojo Working" a steroid injection, Bellini`s harmonica drives the classic at a frantic pace. The sound is mediocre, but Howard and the White Boys` enthusiasm helps to buffer the primitive recording. ~ Andrew Hamilton Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

With his raw, unabashedly twangy voice and simplistic arrangements, he`d be considered "too country" for a generation raised on Garth and Shania. RISIN` OUTLAW, by Hank Williams` grandson, Shelton Hank Williams (or Hank III, as he bills himself), provides a pretty good test of this theory. Not only is Hank III the spitting image of his late grandaddy, he sings just like him too–and on tracks like "You`re the Reason" and "On My Own," the resemblance is downright eerie. But Hank III`s also got more than a streak of his dad, Hank Jr. in him–the CD isn`t called RISIN` OUTLAW for nothing. He alludes to his propensity for bad behavior in "I Don`t Know," and sings openly about snorting cocaine on "Cocaine Blues." Give young Williams credit–having the nerve to bill himself as Hank III invites instant comparisons with his grandfather and his father. On the attitude-filled RISIN` OUTLAW, he manages to do both of them proud, while carving out a niche for himself as a promising alternative country artist. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005.
