A Diamond in the Desert (Paperback) $10.99 A compelling piece of history told with the intimate voice of memoir, A Diamond in the Desert introduces readers to Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates capital resting on one-tenth of the world`s oil. Jo Tatchell arrived in Abu Dhabi as a child in 1974, six years after drills first struck oil and three after the UAE became a nation free of British control. Today, its glittering luxury hotels, recent $10 billion bailout of neighbor Dubai, and branches of the Louvre and Guggenheim museums opening in 2013 have positioned the city for its entrance on the international stage. Tatchell returns for the story behind the headlines: an expat whose husband, a diplomat, served as the earliest British advisor and friend to the UAE`s first president, Sheikh Zayed; her father`s former business partner, who ascended from the merchant class to become one of the city`s richest men and is poised to unveil its latest beachfront development; and an old friend whose extreme partying revealed to Tatchell a city dripping with wealth. But learning the truth behind her brother`s decision to flee the capital and never return reinforces Tatchell`s suspicion that Abu Dhabi may have much to hide. Tatchell takes readers on a tour of Abu Dhabi with an outlook that`s part native, part critic, and part wide-eyed traveler amazed at the changes in this oncesleepy seaport village. The result is an original collage of perspectives and images, an eye-opening take on the forces pushing a little-known city into the international spotlight. |

Twilight in the Desert $11.82 Twilight in the Desert reveals a Saudi oil and production industry that could soon approach a serious, irreversible decline. He uncovers a story about Saudi Arabia?s troubled oil industry, not to mention its political and societal instability, which differs sharply from the globally accepted Saudi version. It?s a story that is provocative and disturbing, based on undeniable facts, but until now never told in its entirety. Twilight in the Desert answers all readers? questions about Saudi oil and production industries with keen examination instead of unsubstantiated posturing, and takes its place as one of the most important books of this still-young century. |

Twilight in the Desert: The Coming Saudi Oil Shock and the World $16.94 "Twilight in the Desert looks behind the curtain to reveal a Saudi oil and production industry that could soon approach a serious, irreversible decline. In this exhaustively researched book, veteran oil industry analyst Matthew Simmons draws on his own three-plus decades of insider experience and more than 200 independently produced reports about Saudi petroleum resources and production operations. What he uncovers is a story about Saudi Arabia's troubled oil industry, not to mention its political and societal instability, which differs sharply from the globally accepted Saudi version." While Saudi officials promise to increase production from current levels if necessary, Twilight in the Desert examines the history of other major oil fields to determine that Saudi Arabia is in fact overproducing its primary resources, and couldn't possibly ramp up production for long. It calls for long-overdue transparency on the part of the Saudis and all significant global oil producers, along with urgently needed energy data reform, and a global energy blueprint for how the world will cope once Saudi oil output has peaked. |

Original Broadway Casts – The Desert Song/New Moon $14.21 2 LPs on 1 CD: THE DESERT SONG (1945)/NEW MOON (1953).Music composed by Sigmund Romberg. Lyrics written by Oscar Hammerstein II and Otto Harbach.Principal casts include: Kitty Carlisle, Wilber Evans, Felix Knight, Thomas Hayward, Jane Wilson, Lee Sweetland.Recorded on March 13-14, 1944 & February 18, 1953. Originally released on Decca 10" LPs (7000) & (5472). Includes liner notes by Eric Myers. All tracks have been digitally remastered.Composers: Otto Harbach; Oscar Hammerstein II; Sigmund Romberg.Personnel: Jane Wilson, Felix Knight, Kitty Carlisle Hart, Wilbur Evans (vocals).Audio Remasterer: Mark Omann.Liner Note Author: Brian Drutman.Recording information: 03/13/1944-02/18/1953.This CD reissue combines two studio-cast recordings of 1920s operettas composed by Sigmund Romberg that were made decades after the original stage productions. Decca Records pioneered the original Broadway cast album with its successful release of recordings from Oklahoma! in 1943, and it was only a short time before the label was also re-creating older musicals in the studio. One of the earliest such sessions, recorded in March 1944, combined Kitty Carlisle, Wilbur Evans (then appearing on Broadway in Cole Porter`s Mexican Hayride), and Felix Knight in a set of songs from the 1926 show The Desert Song. The intention may have been to take advantage of the just-released film adaptation starring Dennis Morgan, though the album wasn`t released for 18 months. When it did appear, however, it was the most complete version of the score yet issued and proved very well sung. Decca had less of an excuse for recording a studio version of the 1928 show The New Moon in 1953, perhaps just the show`s 25th anniversary. But all its rivals — Columbia, RCA Victor, and Capitol — had their own studio-cast recordings in print, while an earlier Decca one made in 1940 may have seemed in need of replacing for the LP era. The cast of Thomas Hayward, Jane Wilson, and Lee Sweetland was not particularly distinguished, and while adequate, didn`t really compare with the 1950 ones with Gordon MacRae on Capitol, and with Nelson Eddy on Columbia. Though the two Decca albums went out of print in the `50s, they have been subject to gray-market reissues, and half a century later, Decca Broadway is wise to bring them back in this legitimate reissue. The sound has been spiffed up considerably, and there is no comparison between this disc and the ones operetta fans have tolerated on CD until now. The 1995 album on Box Office Recordings combining The Desert Song with another Decca studio-cast album featuring Kitty Carlisle, The Merry Widow, is so sonically inferior it sounds like a different recording. The present reissue makes for a welcome and overdue re-addition to the ranks of operettas on record. ~ William Ruhlmann Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Original Soundtrack – The Adventures Of Priscilla: Queen Of The Desert $12.06 Producers include: Ron Miller, Jacques Morali, Steve Buckingham, Dino Fekaris, Freddie Perren.Arranger: Keith Thomas .Stephen Elliot`s 1994 film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert sparkled as it traced the journey of two drag queens, a transsexual, and their pink bus "Priscilla" across the Australian outback. The visuals alone were worth the price of admission, but, with songs leaping off the big screen and onto CD, the accompanying soundtrack album was equally as vibrant, an aural lipstick smear across some of the most classic club staples the scene had to offer. Relying most heavily on the "gay club" anthems of the late `70s, the soundtrack could have stood its ground as a nice disco hits package. But the incorporation of a full spectrum of material boosted The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert to even brighter heights. While the Village People classic "Go West," Alicia Bridges` one-hit wonder "I Love the Nightlife (Disco Round)," and Gloria Gaynor`s 1978 chest-beater "I Will Survive," for example, make the first point, it`s the inclusion of Patti Page`s 1950 hit "I Don`t Care if the Sun Don`t Shine" and Charlene`s 1980 tear-jerker "I`ve Never Been to Me" that makes the second. And, although they ultimately detract from the album`s overall cohesion, club kids will be thrilled with a handful of extended mix tracks cobbled onto the end of the set. While the regular 12" "Go West" isn`t too unusual, the seriously updated 1993 12" mix of "I Will Survive" and the "I Love the Nightlife (Disco Round)" extended vocal mix are devilishly hard to find. The end result is as vivacious, stunning, and beautiful as the celluloid imprint of that pink bus, music booming from the windows, hitching across the sun-baked earth. ~ Amy Hanson Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Green Desert $13.99 Tangerine Dream includes: Edgar Froese, Peter Bauman, Chris Franke, Klaus Schulze.Includes liner notes by Paul Russell.Originally recorded in 1973, Green Desert did not see the light of day until it was remixed and released as part of the In the Beginning box set in 1986, then as its own album later the same year. It is difficult to ascertain how radical this release is from the original recording, but as it stands, it is a logical step between the rawer-produced Atem to the ambient/sequencer-driven style of Phaedra. A key element of this is attributable to Edgar Froese’s guitar playing on the title track, an unhurried solo that lasts only about five minutes in the nearly 20-minute piece, yet is easily the most memorable part of the entire song. None of the three shorter songs are as dynamic as the first, each containing a keyboard melody played over synthesized noises and the rhythms of drums, sequencers, or a series of chords. While it is historically vital to the progress of the band, and will definitely be of interest to its fans and those interested in the roots of modern ambient music, it probably will not be as necessary to those outside the genre. ~ Brian E. Desert Kingdom (Hardcover) $24.84 Oil and water, and the science and technology used to harness them, have long been at the heart of political authority in Saudi Arabia. Oil’s abundance, and the fantastic wealth it generated, has been a keystone in the political primacy of the kingdom’s ruling family. The other bedrock element was water, whose importance was measured by its dearth. Over much of the twentieth century, it was through efforts to control and manage oil and water that the modern state of Saudi Arabia emerged. The central government’s power over water, space, and people expanded steadily over time, enabled by increasing oil revenues. The operations of the Arabian American Oil Company proved critical to expansion and to achieving power over the environment. Political authority in Saudi Arabia took shape through global networks of oil, science, and expertise. And, where oil and water were central to the forging of Saudi authoritarianism, they were also instrumental in shaping politics on the ground. Nowhere was the impact more profound than in the oil-rich Eastern Province, where the politics of oil and water led to a yearning for national belonging and to calls for revolution.Saudi Arabia is traditionally viewed through the lenses of Islam, tribe, and the economics of oil. Desert Kingdom now provides an alternative history of environmental power and the making of the modern Saudi state. It demonstrates how vital the exploitation of nature and the roles of science and global experts were to the consolidation of political authority in the desert. |

Ashra – Walkin` the Desert $20.69 Ashra: Manuel Gottsching, Lutz Ulbrich (guitar, keyboards).Recorded at Studio Roma, Berlin, Germany in 1988 & 1989. Includes liner notes by Manel Gottsching. After a prolific run in the 1970s, Manuel G\u0014ttsching`s `80s output with Ash Ra Tempel was greatly reduced and the quality of his work was uneven: Belle Alliance flirted with contemporary synth pop with mixed results; E2-E4 proved influential, resonating with subsequent electronic artists; and the cheesy new age travelogue Tropical Heat dabbled in some of the decade`s worst sonic clich\u0002s. Recorded in 1988, Walkin` the Desert struck a tasteful balance between G\u0014ttsching`s experimental inclinations and a more mainstream techno sensibility. The album is an edited version of a performance given with Lutz Ulbrich in Berlin for the Desert Sounds event series (part of the Berlin: European Capital of Culture festival). In its original context, the music was accompanied by readings from works by Otl Aicher, Albert Camus and Antoine de Saint-Exup\u0002ry and, in keeping with the event`s thematic focus on the desert, the record displays recurring Middle Eastern and Asian nuances and motifs. The minimalist influence of Steve Reich and Philip Glass, who inspired some of G\u0014ttsching`s strongest mid-`70s material, is still evident on "First Movement: Two Keyboards," an arrangement of rippling piano patterns with subtly changing intensities. "Second Movement: Six Voices" initially trades sparse, mantra-like rigidity for expansive synth textures and an austere symphonic gravitas, although the track gradually coalesces with ornate percussive chimes. The album`s Eastern dimension is most explicit on the epic "Fourth Movement: Twelve Samples," which weaves a hypnotic tapestry of vocal loops and concludes with what sounds like a muezzin`s voice. Despite the emphasis on keyboards, synths and samples, G\u0014ttsching doesn`t completely forsake his signature cosmic guitar sound on Walkin` the Desert: "Dessert: Eight Tracks" combines soaring guitar lines with plucked strings. Like Tropical Heat, this album comprises a sort of musical travelogue — happily, however, Walkin` the Desert takes listeners on a much more pleasant and compelling journey. ~ Wilson Neate Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Burtynsky Oil $77.96 Edward Burtynsky`s Oil collects a decades` worth of photographing the world`s largest oil fields, refineries, freeway interchanges and automobile plants, in an attempt to comprehend the scale of production attending this most politicized of resources. The ideal photographer for this job, Burtynsky locates and documents the sites that urban dwellers never see, and questions human accountability. His imagery is vast in both scale and ambition, revealing the apparatus behind the energy we mine from dwindling resources, and the ongoing effects of the industrial revolution. "In 1997 I had what I refer to as my oil epiphany," Burtynsky explains: "it occurred to me that all the vast, man-altered landscapes I had been in pursuit of for over 20 years were all possible because of the discovery of oil and the mechanical advantage of the internal combustion engine." Burtynsky`s epiphany is typical of his desire to lift the scrim of everyday life and reveal the basic resources that keep it in place. What lies beyond is not pretty, and the images in Oil sometimes resemble the post-apocalyptic desert landscapes of Mad Max, with their vast horizons of featureless sand and desert foliage, punctuated by creaky-looking oil machinery. With a unflinching eye, Burtynsky presents us with the reality of oil production as its role in our civilization undergoes massive transformation. |
