Ayurveda: Art of Being [Original Soundtrack] $17.99 Original score composed by Cyril Morin.Cyril Morin.Personnel: Christine Kotschi (violin, bamboo flute, duduk).Audio Mixers: Cyril Morin; Bruno Merc?re.Liner Note Author: Pan Nalin.Photographer: Albert Watson .Unknown Contributor Role: Vidya Rao.Arranger: Cyril Morin. This soundtrack accompanies AYURVEDA: ART OF BEING, a documentary about the ancient Indian system of natural healthcare. Composer Cyril Morin blends Eastern melodies, traditional vocals, and instruments with modern rhythms and keyboards in a broad palette that reflects the balance and richness of the Ayurvedan elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space. At times the effects are stunningly simple as in the flute dialogue in “Vatta – Air and Ether” and, in others, a layered tapestry of dynamic elements, such as in the deeply enchanting symphony of “Five Elements.” |

Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section [Import] $84.99 Personnel: Art Pepper (alto saxophone); Red Garland (piano); Paul Chambers (acoustic bass); Philly Joe Jones (drums).Recorded at Contemporary’s Studio, Los Angeles, California on January 19, 1957. Originally released on Contemporary (7532). Includes liner notes by Lester Koenig. In the 1950s, Miles Davis assembled one of the premier rhythm sections in jazz. His pre-Bill Evans group, consisting of pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones (heard on such albums as ROUND ABOUT MIDNIGHT and MILESTONES) was hard to beat. The way they performed together was remarkable, at once musically conversational and nearly telepathic in their collective thinking. On this unusual ‘57 outing, “West Coast cool” alto saxophonist Art Pepper teams up with these great rhythm players. The result is a seamless match of styles and approaches that showcases the skills of all four master musicians. Highlights include the burning-fast Pepper original “Straight Life” and the endearing “Red Pepper Blues,” a tune composed by Red Garland just five hours prior to the recording session. |

The Original Soundtrack [Import] $84.99 10cc: Lol Creme (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, mandolin, violin, autoharp, piano, organ, Moog, vibraphone, percussion); Kevin Godley (vocals, cello, Moog, marimba, drums, timpani, percussion, bongos, timbali); Graham Gouldman (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, mandolin, autoharp, bass, acoustic & 6-string bass, percussion); Eric Stewart (vocals, guitar, steel guitar, piano, organ, electric piano).Recorded at Strawberry Recording Studios (UK) Ltd., Stockport, Cheshire, England.10cc: Lol Creme (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, mandolin, violin, autoharp, piano, organ, Moog, vibraphone, percussion); Kevin Godley (vocals, cello, Moog, marimba, drums, timpani, percussion, bongos, timbali); Graham Gouldman (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, mandolin, autoharp, bass, acoustic & 6-string bass, percussion); Eric Stewart (vocals, guitar, steel guitar, piano, organ, electric piano).Recorded at Strawberry Recording Studios (UK) Ltd., Stockport, Cheshire, England.10cc’s third album is their first after their break with novelty-minded pop impresario Jonathan King, and as a result, it’s less cute and bouncy than either 10CC or SHEET MUSIC. This doesn’t mean that the music is less melodic, or that the group’s satiric intent is duller, but THE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK is a more subtle, mature record. The group was rewarded with their first US hit, the exquisitely lovely and understated “I’m Not In Love,” surely one of the oddest love songs–in both arch concept and minimal execution–of the era. Elsewhere, Eric Stewart, Graham Gouldman, Lol CrFme, and Kevin Godley get their first opportunity to stretch out compositionally on the surprising extended suite “Une Nuit a Paris” and the lyrically acute “The Second Sitting for the Last Supper.” While not all of 10cc’s new fans got all of the jokes, art pop aficionados swear by this album. |

The Art of the Steal - $19.99 Born into a working-class family in Philadelphia, Albert C. Barnes was a man who through hard work and determination became a doctor and medical researcher, founding a successful pharmaceutical firm that made him a multimillionaire. As his fortune grew, Barnes developed a taste for art and in time assembled one of the world’s most remarkable private collections, featuring original paintings by Van Gogh, Renoir, Picasso, C?zanne, and many other important artists. Barnes relied on his own instincts rather than the advice of experts when he bought paintings, and he had little use for the pretentious attitudes of Philadelphia’s art collectors and high society; the animosity between Barnes and the city’s art establishment grew to the point that in 1922 he opened the Barnes Foundation, a private gallery where he kept his collection rather than share it with institutions such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The Barnes Foundation was open by invitation only, and the doctor preferred to have his collection seen by students and serious art lovers rather than those he felt didn’t appreciate the work. Barnes died in 1951, and made strict provisions in his will that his collection was not to be sold, lent to other museums, or removed from the grounds of the Barnes Foundation. Lincoln University, a traditionally African-American college, was appointed to oversee the foundation’s collection. But after the death of Barnes’ prot?g?e Violette de Mazia in 1988, Lincoln University’s trustees took full control of the collection, now estimated to be worth 25 billion dollars, and a number of individuals and organizations inexperienced in the world of art laid hands upon the Barnes archive. The Art of the Steal is a documentary by Don Argott that explores how greed, political power, and good intentions colluded to violate Albert C. Barnes’ wishes and scatter his collection across the globe. The Art of the Steal was an official selection at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

The Fruit of the Original Sin $20.99 The second compilation released by the Belgian label Crepescule in the early ’80s, and easily the most ambitious of its earliest such efforts, The Fruit of the Original Sin at the time acted as a sprawling catchall that drew together many different strands of what could be called post-punk and art rock from all over Europe and North America. From a distance, it’s even more of an astonishing effort, thanks not only to the many bands and performers who appeared and later established strong reputations worldwide, but the sheer, surprising range of who appeared. If there’s an exact modern equivalent to a collection that starts with a discordant modern jazz/classical composition (Peter Gordon’s martial title track) and includes not only live poetry snippets (William S. Burroughs’ “Twilight’s Last Gleaming,” an often uproarious recording that concluded the original release) but an interpretation of Claude Debussy (Cecile Bruynoghe’s “Clair de Lune”) and an extended interview with a noted author, in this case French writer Marguerite Duras — with piano accompaniment after the fact from Virginia Astley, no less — then it’s not received the attention it should. It’s all the more impressive given that Crepescule was still just starting out in ways, but if one needed proof of the success of the D.I.Y. ethic well beyond punk crash and bash, it’s here. A couple of the contributors who appeared were utterly obscure then and now but the amount of downright legendary folks who had some of their earliest — or even debut — recordings here reads like an honor list. The Durutti Column’s elegant entries include “The Eye and the Hand” and “Experiment in Fifth”; DNA’s three short pieces show off their moody, understated aggro side well, all scraping guitar and driving bass; Arthur Russell’s “Sketch for ‘Face of Helen’” is an unsurprisingly captivating take on a gentle drone melody mixed with distant fuzz; and Wim Mertens’ minimal string quartet composition “Multiple 12″ rivals it for beauty. Paul Haig’s “Mad Horses” is an odd number even for him, a minimal slice of motorik funk that later generations would call lo-fi. Meanwhile, the number of artists who barely got beyond one album, if even that, but ended up getting plenty of cult attention as time passed is also striking — Marine pop up a couple of times, most notably with the skittery funk of “Animal in My Head,” while the French Impressionists have a slightly louche ball early on with “Boo Boo’s Gone Mambo/My Guardian Angel.” Having released various tracks from the album on single-artist compilations and reissues over the years, LTM finally issued a full two-CD re-release of the compilation in 2007, including a further eight bonus tracks from related releases or compilations at the time. Paul Haig reappears with two obscure Rhythm of Life tracks, the Durutti Column’s “Weakness and Fever,” an alternate recording of “Smile in This Crowd,” takes a bow, while Peter Gordon’s collaboration with artist Lawrence Weiner |

The Aviator [Original Soundtrack] $6.99 For his film about the early career of Howard Hughes, legendary director Martin Scorcese (famed for his excellent use of music in movies) wisely chose to use period material. Thus, the soundtrack of THE AVIATOR is occupied both by recordings from the late 1920s-early ’40s, and by contemporary versions of songs from that era, done in the style of the day. In lesser hands, such an undertaking could have been a crass, mismatched train wreck, but THE AVIATOR album segues with almost shocking ease between the two.Vince Giordano & his Nighthawks Orchestra, a NYC-based early-jazz revival band, contribute a number of pre-swing jazz instrumentals, and as things progress chronologically, the swing sounds of Benny Goodman (”Moonglow”) and Glenn Miller (”Moonlight Serenade”) creep in. Along the way, the Wainwright family represents surprisingly well, with a track each from Loudon, Rufus, and Martha, and even David Johansen gets in on the act (not a shock, considering his penchant for covering pre-rock material). Things close appropriately with blues giant Leadbelly singing “Howard Hughes,” a musical tribute to THE AVIATOR himself. |
