Chu Chin Chow – Fullscreen B&W Collector’s Special $14.99 The timeworn British stage musical Chu Chin Chow had already been made into a silent picture when this talkie version made its bow in 1934. Based on Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves, the film stars corpulent music-hall comedian George Robey as Ali Baba, sinister Fritz Kortner as robber captain Abu Hahan, and exotic Anna May Wong as slave girl Zahrat, who saves Ali’s life by properly applying oil to a collection of not-so-empty barrels. The obligatory romantic subplot is handled by John Garrick and Pearl Argyle, while comedy relief is supplied by a vaudevillian named Jetsam (that’s right, of the team of “Flotsam and…”) Director Walter Forde does little to “cinematize” the old property, which is just as well. In The Mood For Love - $34.99 For his first film since the 1997 Hong Kong handover, auteur filmmaker Wong Kar-wai directs this moody period drama about unrequited love that, like his earlier work, swoons with romantic melancholy. Set in a Shanghaiese enclave in Hong Kong in 1962, the film centers on two young couples who rent adjacent rooms in a cramped and crowded tenement. Li-zhen (Maggie Cheung) works as a secretary in an export company while her husband’s job at a Japanese multinational keeps him away on extended business trips. Across the hall, Chow (Tony Leung Chiu-wai) works as a newspaper editor and is married to a woman who is also frequently out of town. Neither respective spouse is ever shown in full, instead they are shot from the back or obscured by walls and furniture. Li-zhen and Chow soon strike up a cordial — if tenative — friendship. Chow begins to suspect that his wife’s long absences are not entirely business related when he stops in unannounced at her office to discover that she is not there. Later, a colleague tells him that he saw his wife with another man. The icing on the cake comes when Chow notices that Li-zhen’s handbag is identical to his wife’s while Li-zhen discovers that Chow is wearing a tie that she gave her husband; it doesn’t take long for them to realize that their spouses are sleeping together. Drawn together by shame and anger, Chow and Li-zhen reveal nothing of their discoveries to their partners. While working through their guilt by imagining how their adulterous spouses first hooked up and rehearsing interrogations, the pair slowly fall in love in spite of their determination to uphold their end of their marital vows. In addition to a blatant disregard for gravity and other physical laws, this film revolves around a popular genre theme, a battle between warriors from different schools and styles of kung fu. At the heart of the conflict is a magical sword; when the family of a young boy is murdered by villains who want the sword, the boy is taken in by his great uncle (Hung). The child grows into a strong fighter (Li), who seeks revenge on his family’s killers. ~ Jonathan E. International action star Jet Li plays Chow Si-kit, a bookish novelist whose writing is adversely affected by his problematic relationship with his wife Monica (Rosamund Kwan). Chow is best known for a series of books under the “King of Adventurers” banner in which his courageous alter-ego, an adventurer patterned on Indiana Jones from Raiders of the Lost Ark, uses his impressive martial-arts skills and prodigious cunning to fight the Japanese. Chow’s personal life is threatening his deadline, however, so his assistants Shing (Takeshi Kaneshiro) and Yvonne (Charlie Yeung) decide to help him out by setting up a story line, which is then played out for the viewer. Hero Chow (Li again) is asked to purloin a letter from the Japanese embassy by the Chinese government. Writer Chow is upset that the story’s heroine, Cammy (Kwan again) reminds him of Monica, so he makes her a villain. Chow and Shing’s 1930s alter-egos, meanwhile, are looking for a magical box (not unlike the Lost Ark of the Covenant in the film’s model) which can be used to divine the future or — if the necessary safeguards are not followed — bring evil onto whoever opens it. The box is also being sought by the Japanese military and a group of criminals called the Salt Gang, whose leader (Ngai Sing) makes the mistake of opening it without taking steps to protect himself. Monica then takes over the writing and sends the characters to the magical scripture which can help them use the box’s power to defeat their enemies. Another version of the film cuts all of the modern-day material and adds new 1930s footage to explain the abrupt shifts in story line caused by the intervention of the multiple authors. When Chow’s admiring young son (Gow Ian Iskander) reveals to his father that his mother is packing her bags and planning a hasty getaway, the enraged Chow delivers a merciless beating to the woman that leaves father and son to fend for themselves. Now forced to resort to petty thievery as a means of helping dad pay off a series of lingering gambling debts, the young boy soon ends up locked away in a juvenile-detention facility. Soon thereafter, when Chow drops by to visit his son, the boy launches a vicious attack on his father that drives the pair apart for more than a decade. Opening in the year 2046, in which a man named Tak (Takuya Kimura) attempts to persuades wjw 1967 (Faye Wong) to travel back in time with him, the film soon shifts to the year 1966, in which Chow Mo-wan (Tony Leung Chiu-wai), a struggling author, asks the woman he loves, Su Lizhen (Gong Li) to sail with him from Singapore to Hong Kong on Christmas Eve. She declines, and over the next three years, we return to Chow Mo-wan on December 24 as he finds himself with another woman each year — lighthearted Lulu (Carina Lau) in 1967, eccentric hotel heiress Wang Jingwen (Faye Wong) in 1968, and Bai Ling (Zhang Ziyi), a high-class prostitute, in 1969. In time, Chow Mo-wan and Wang Jingwen become reacquainted, and a love affair blooms, but the fates are not on their side. 2046 had its world premiere at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. God of Gamblers II – Widescreen Subtitle AC3 Dolby Dts $19.99 At one time there was a special genre of Hong Kong entertainment films which focused on gamblers and their like. In 1989, that genre was decisively revived thanks to the very successful release God of Gamblers. In that earlier film, among his other accomplishments, the master gambler played by Chow Yun Fat managed to pass on many of his skills and abilities to a younger associate, played by Andy Lau. In this one, Lau’s character, now a master gambler in his own right, is being pestered by a young man (Stephen Chow) with intermittently available psychokinetic powers (the ability to move objects with the mind). However, not only is that ability only available to the boy when he’s in love, but there’s a lot more to the gambling business than the ability to cheat occasionally. They get into enough trouble to keep the story moving briskly, and this comic action film did well enough to warrant a sequel. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi |
