Alfred Sisley remains one of the least known of the major Impressionists. Although a prolific artist, the uneven quality of his output has made it difficult to clearly establish his particular place within the history of Impressionism. Discovering Impressionism: The Life of Paul Durand-Ruel (Mark Magowan Books)

$14.73

Paul Durand-Ruel (1831-1922) is widely credited as the dealer who “made” the professional careers of Renoir, Degas, Manet, Monet, Sisley, Pissarro, Puvis de Chavannes, and other painters of fin-de-siècle Paris. Driven by the conviction that the work of the Impressionists was an artistic revelation, he led the fight against critical opinion and brought these artists to the public. His event-filled…

This Not That: The Artist John Baldessari -

This Not That: The Artist John Baldessari -

$24.99

As one of the most unusual of all contemporary art forms, conceptual art is an art form that finds the ideas or concepts attached to the work taking on much greater importance than visual concerns. The mode, which frequently overlaps with the concept of artistic installations, took on greatest popularity in the 1960s, and went on to inspire and shape the work of artists over the next several decades. Examples include Fred Forest buying a blank space in the newspaper and inviting readers to contribute their own art, and Robert Rauschenberg sending a short note that claimed to be a portrait as his contribution to a gallery exhibit. Artist John Baldessari (b. 1931) helped launch this movement and thus earned a reputation as one of its true harbingers. As produced by Jan Schmidt-Garre, this release profiles Baldessari, his cutting-edge thought patterns, his contributions to the Conceptual Art movement, and his visions of artistic expression per se. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Portrait of an Artist: Frida Kahlo -

Portrait of an Artist: Frida Kahlo -

$24.99

Known as much for her personal suffering as for her art, Frida Kahlo painted her passions. Her moving and self-reflective work is documented in this one-hour program. Kahlo was plagued her whole life with illness, including polio as a child, a horrific accident in her teens that broke her back, and a leg amputation a year before her death. Her struggles with her body translate into her painting, making her a memorable contributor to the Mexican Surrealist movement. Portrait of an Artist: Frida Kahlo takes viewers into her famous Blue House which has become a museum. It also sets the scene for the social and artistic climate that contributed to the start of her popularity all over the world. ~ Sarah Ing, Rovi

In this particular episode, viewers explore the life and work of Manet, the artist who came to be recognized as the leader of the French Impressionists. Lethal Landscapes: Canvases of the Combat Artist -

Lethal Landscapes: Canvases of the Combat Artist -

$12.99

One of the most unique but least-known branches of the art world is that of combat art – a field where artistically-inclined soldiers realistically draw and paint harrowing moments of combat and the banal vicissitudes of military life. Much of the formal education for this field occurs at DINFOS, the Defense INformation School at Fort Meade, Maryland. This biographical documentary from Maryland Public Television profiles several such artists, who open up on their experiences in such conflicts as Iraq, Somalia and Vietnam. One of the subjects, a female marine, discusses her immersion in the Iraq War – and an incident that forced her to temporarily abandon her canvas, pick up a gun, and return fire. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Rothko's Rooms: The Life and Works of an American Artist -

Rothko’s Rooms: The Life and Works of an American Artist -

$14.99

Like fellow American artist Jackson Pollock, painter Mark Rothko (1903-1970) built his reputation during the immediate post-WWII years for his broadly-scaled abstract paintings. Rothko’s chief goal lay in using the artworks, with their layered shapes, colors and textures, to elicit a spectrum of raw human emotions – from fear to anger to ecstasy to melancholia, and everything in-between. Ontologically, he sought complete envelopment of the spectator in the aesthetic tableaux at hand. This transcontinentally-produced 2000 documentary relays the chronological tale of Rothko’s life as it discusses the gradual development of his artistry over the passage of time; it uses as a thematic touchstone the fact that one of Rothko’s ongoing quests involved the pursuit of the perfect “space” in which to showcase his artwork (hence the “rooms” of the title). Interviews with the artist’s son and daughter, Christopher and Kate, are featured, in addition to discussions with Rothko’s close friends, acquaintances and colleagues in the art world, and a host of art historians. The late architect Philip Johnson is one of the interviewees. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
