Rusty Truck – Luck`s Changing Lanes [7/29] $13.83 Not to be too confusing (or perhaps that`s the point?), Luck`s Changing Lanes by Rusty Truck was originally issued as Broken Promises in 2003 on the tiny Code Terra imprint. Rusty Truck are the band fronted by songwriter and celebrated photographer Mark Seliger, whose work has graced well over 100 Rolling Stone covers and has appeared in magazines and exhibits around the world. The album featured performances and productions by many of Seliger`s friends: Jakob Dylan; T Bone Burnett, Sheryl Crow, Lenny Kravitz, Willie Nelson, Gillian Welch, and David Rawlings among them. This new fifth-anniversary deluxe edition released by Rykodisc (during its own 25th anniversary year) is a completely repackaged, reconceived version. For starters, the rather generic Americana cover of the original has been replaced by a handsome double-disc digipack with the band`s name in bold letters. The inner booklet has been redesigned to include five of Seliger`s photographs taken at a rodeo and on the open range. In addition, there is a new track, "New York Fallen Angel," in place of the original album cut "Fool." The new package also contains a DVD with five videos co-directed by Seliger and Phillip Andelman, conceptually illustrating with beautiful cinematography half a ducat of songs from the album: the title track, "Cold Ground," "1000 Kisses," "Never Going Back," and "So Long Farewell." The recording is presented in optional 5.1 or standard two-channel stereo. For fans who bought the original, fear not, this is far from a cheap gimmick to get your cash a second time, and is a beautiful artifact as a package; the bonus videos, photos, and new design add intrinsic value to the wealth of aesthetic material on offer here. ~ Thom Jurek Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Rodan – Rusty * $13.4 Rodan: Jeffrey Mueller (guitar, vocals), Jason B. Noble (guitar, vocals, piano), Tara Jane O`Neil (bass, vocals), Kevin Coultas (drums, guitar, vocals).Additional personnel: Christian Frederickson (viola), Eve Miller, Nat Barrett (cello), Michael Kurth (bass).Personnel: Jason Noble (vocals, guitar, piano); Kevin Coultas (vocals, guitar, drums); Christian Frederickson (viola); Eve Miller (cello); Tara Jane O`Neil (electric bass).Recording information: Chicago, IL (10/20/1993-10/22/1993); Our House, Louisville, KY (10/20/1993-10/22/1993).The lone EP by this seminal Kentucky post-hardcore outfit (whose members would go on to equally beloved indie outfits such as June of 44), reissued with renewed clarity by original label Quarterstick, is a behemoth of unpredictable quiet-loud arrangements and whisper-to-a-wail vocals. The six-song set begins inauspiciously enough with the seven-minute instrumental "Bible Silver Corner," but quickly fires up to its metallically meandering mid-section, highlighted by the 12-minute epic "The Everyday World Of Bodies." Years later, RUSTY sounds anything but what its title suggests; it`s a cornerstone of the mid-`90s uprising of artsy ex-punks making complicated math rock. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Dan Fogelberg – Captured Angel $6.99 Also available with HOME FREE on 1 cassette, and with SOUVENIRS and NETHER LANDS in a CD 3-pack.Dan Fogelberg is a singer-songwriter in the confessional vein of Joni Mitchell; his work at this time was also heavily influenced by America, the Eagles, and Crosby, Stills, and Nash. His most successful work dates from the 1970s and early 1980s. Fogelberg`s best songs are generally those that have a little muscle to them ("Phoenix") or manage to transcend his penchant for cliched, sentimental lyrics and maudlin arrangements to be genuinely affecting ("There`s a Place in the World for a Gambler"). This album is one of the weakest in his canon. Selections like "Next Time" and the title track are bland and bloodless, marred further by pedestrian performances and easy-way-out arrangements and production. Other numbers like "Below the Surface" and "These Days" are better in this regard, but suffer from didactic lyrics. The album`s weakest track, "Aspen," is an unengagingly syrupy, string-based instrumental with odd and ineffective chord changes. A few songs are worth hearing, though. "Comes and Goes" is a short, understated selection proving the adage "less is more." "Crow" is a decent, brooding song made very listenable by an appealingly intricate arrangement. And "The Last Nail" is one of his songs that manages to grab the emotions and be deeply affecting almost in spite of itself. Demerits also go for Fogelberg`s inexpert cover painting of an unintentionally androgynous angel. Dedicated fans may enjoy this album, but others may not find it attractive. ~ David Cleary Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |
